Bristol 2k and/or Grimsby mile - anybody going?
ok I need something to train for so I have just sent off my entry for Bristol which is on October 19th. I will have the dubious pleasure of doing my first race as a 50 year old. I have put down a projected time of 7:25 but would hope to be able to better that time by then.
I have managed to persuade a work colleague to enter this as he lives in Bristol anyway - it will be his first rowing race. I have also hopefully persuaded some of the Malvern Free Spirits to come down as well. Mark Cawthorne and John Bryan for starters, and Laura Fairburn is thinking about it. Mark - how about twisting Brians arm? or is he still hellbent on doing a 100k around then?
I have also downloaded my entry for Grimsby the week before, which will be my last race in the 40-49 category. Looking for 5:50 or under.

I will be going Stan, downloaded an IP plan based on October 19th 3 weeks ago, so see you there as a 50 yo mate
For the first time in 6 years I won't be going to Grimsby, will try to do it again next year though as its a great event.

Bristol is not on my radar but Shrewsbury is - Sept 8th I think (not too far for you is it Stan). Grimsby is also firmly pencilled in.

Know Shrewsbury is a date that I have been toying with...mmmmmm. I could really do with at least one race just to get the adrenaline flowing.

Just a quick update from my iPhone. Silver medal in 5:51.8, which is about the time I expected, just didn't anticipate the medal. Fuller report when I get back home.

Re: Bristol 2k and/or Grimsby mile - anybody going?
Thanks Paul. Not much of an achievement really given there were only 3 in the category but you gotta be in it to win it
It was a new venue this year and most impressive it was too. The ergs were arranged in a semi circle on the school stage with an enormous screen behind them which allowed everyone in the audience to easily see what was going on. The best screen at a race ever bar none including BIRC.
I got there about an hour and a half before the race and said hi to a few familiar faces from sub 7 and a few unfamiliar faces. Completed the warmup with about 10 minutes to spare - plenty of warmup machines - all brand new model Es which admittedly are not my favourite machines, but they did the job.
The aim was to go off at 1:51 pace hold it until 500 to go then wind it up and sprint the final 200 or so. It more or less went to plan. The 1:51 with hindsight may have been too cautious as I brought the average down to 1:49 during the last 300, and suspect a slightly braver start would have go me under 5:50. I will try and make up for it at Bristol next weekend.
Slightly stunned a little later to win the silver (and a nice bottle of wine for coming so far), a long way behind the eventual winner John Gregory who was about 30 seconds quicker! Fastest mile of the day was Ollie Thorne in just under 5:03
We then moved on to the sprints with a 100 thrash. Utterly messed it up at the start and failed to keep rowing all the way past the finish so ended up with a very disappointing 17.9.
I had a much better 300 dipping under 55seconds I think (I may revise the time later when the results come out).
Fairly happy with my form at the moment and hoping to be well under 7:20 at BIRC and may even manage it at Bristol.

Colin I wasn't actually wearing it! I wasn't showing it off, just providing proof to a sceptical public. After all who would have thought I could do it

Re: Bristol 2k and/or Grimsby mile - anybody going?
Just some slight corrections to my times. No deliberate lying was going on, just faulty memory doubtless caused by my impending senility when I hit the big 5 0 this week.
My mile time was slightly quicker at 5:51.2 (1:49.1) and the 300m was slightly slower at 55.6

Re: Bristol 2k and/or Grimsby mile - anybody going?
Just back from Bristol.
A great venue and the organisers kept everything more or less on time. Had the great pleasure of meeting Richard Lindner as well Rachel Harris again. Met up with a few of the sub 7s so quite a few familiar faces.
My race was at 11:30 which I felt was fairly civilized. The plan was sit on 1:50 / 1:51 so anything between 7:24 and 7:20 would be acceptable, although sub 7:20 would have been great.
I managed 7:21.8 (1:50.4) which I was happy with but looking at the splits, the sub 7:20 was there for the taking had just committed myself more in the first 500:
1:51.8, 1:50.8, 1:50.4, 1:48.7.
Oh well something to work on for BIRC.
I have to thank Richard for giving something to think about other than the pain as I tried to work out how he was only 3m behind me given his pb of 7:40. While he did fade a little towards the end he did get a pb so very well done to him - I will let him tell the story though.
Rachel managed a superb time of 7:15.8 and it is testament to the quality of the womens 30-39 field that that was only good enough for 4th!
All in all a good day at the races and I would recommend this meeting for anybodys race diary next year.
