53, 6'2" and trying to get back to 95kg post hip replacement. Looking back fondly on past achievements I've no chance of repeating

Re: Irish IRC 3rd March
Well done Damian and Stan.
I met Damian at the last RIRC (in late 2011) and hope to meet both of them at next year's event (although I'll be rowing in a different age category to Stan, thankfully.

Great stuff Damian - you need to update that sig! (and well done to the other Stan - does he ever come on here to read our congratulations? Hope so!)
Loved the Irish when I did it in 2006, and met up with Paul V. and big John G. I think we all came 5th in our races, and enjoyed a Guinness or several afterwards. Remember it, Paul?

Yes, I remember it well. You're right - we all finished 5th.Mike Channin wrote:Great stuff Damian - you need to update that sig! (and well done to the other Stan - does he ever come on here to read our congratulations? Hope so!)

I was at my office Christmas party the night before and didn't get to bed until around 3 a.m. I think I was still drunk (or at the very least, slightly hungover) when I arrived in UCD. I was looking around for someone wearing Free Spirits colours and I saw this chap rowing very slowly on one of the warm up machines. I went up to introduce myself and I probably nearly knocked you out with the smell of alcohol off me (OK, slight exaggeration, but you get the picture).
Big John coxed me and I realised with around 300m to go that I could get sub 7 if I put in a strong finish. I think I finished in 6:59.4, less than a second outside the medals and around 3 seconds behind the winner. Mind you, he was a LWT who had already won the 50 -59 LWT race and I'm sure he could have gone faster if he really wanted to. (David Hislop, if my memory doesn't deceive me).
Someone took a photo of the 3 of us together afterwards and I think I still have it somewhere. It was my first time rowing "in the flesh" and it was great to meet a couple of fellow Free Spirits. I kind of regret not going to bed a bit earlier the night before, but a party is a party and a race is only a race.

Re: Irish IRC 3rd March
And that is why you're a legend, Mr Victory!
Yes, I think Mr Hislop was there and doubling up. I don't recall you being too sozzled at the time, moreso later in the evening! I do remember your descriptions of the night before, though. I'd love to see that picture - I probably look like a stray Leprechaun next to big John. My race was a bit ordinary, despite being my second fastest. I was nowhere near the 4th place guy, and comfortably safe from 6th, so I didn't quite manage to find the same motivation to bury myself in the final sprint as I did at BIRC, and came in around 6:40.5. Did manage to amuse Nigel though.

Re: Irish IRC 3rd March
Now I come to think of it, I think we all ended up in O'Donoghue's of Merrion Row that night, sampling some of the best Guinness in Dublin. I think I bailed out early because I was still a bit kn*ckered from the night before, but you and John were still going strong. Does that sound familiar?

Re: Irish IRC 3rd March
I remember a meal and a decent red, then the bar with the Guinness, some Guinness, more Guinness, and then later on sitting in the hotel reception at some time in the morning with John waiting for his cab to come. I remember that the Guinness was worth the trip on its own. Hope to do it again one day!
