Another 24!
I've left this to as late as I thought reasonable to announce that next Saturday/Sunday I will be making an attempt to take back the 24hr British Record taken away from me by C2 owing to an "oversight".
The only reason I am attempting this is because the opportunity came along to join another dual 24 hour WR attempt quite locally to me (Coppull, Nr Chorley in Lancashire - about 30 mins from my home) and I was riding on the back of the fact they had a gym facility and a support team arranged (and I know both the rowers although they are not Free Spirits). As it was their "gig" I kept a low profile but unfortunately one has suffered an injury and I've moved a little more "front and centre" now.
Being a very old 40~49 now (50 in 2 months) I'm seriously not sure I have it in my locker this time as I remember how awful I felt after my dual 24 hour/26 hour WR row last May. I'm not sure if I said to Jane that I never want to do one again - maybe my mind is playing tricks
The only slight advantage I have this time is a bit more distraction (public venue) plus the fact that I CAN taking longer than 10 minute breaks if I have to. My intention is to try not to use more but it's a comfort at the back of my mind that if I need 15~20 minutes once or twice (if we manage to get a physio especially) for some treatment or proper rest/refuelling etc
I will post up a excel spreadsheet googledoc link for anyone that's interested to follow (it will have two tabs at the bottom for the two rowers so you can follow the progress of either).
I did wonder about posting this under "Training and Racing" but I guess it is a race - albeit a veerrrrrrryy loonnnnnnngg one!
Target - to beat 234,039m (1m more will be fine, I'm not going for heroics here!)
Assuming 50 minutes rowed per hour, thats an average of 9752m - or 2:33/500m (looks easy on paper, reality is an entirely different matter)
I hope to have 2 laptops (one for Rowpro (offline)) and one for Facebook, the forum and updating Googledocs etc). Any support received during the event will be massively appreciated and may be the difference between success and failure (I kid you not).
Fun starts around 9am - ish (weigh in shouldn't be an issue I was 67.4kg after my row today!)

With all due respect, the British record was not yours to be taken away, as the "oversight" you mention involved. somebody having rowed further than you in 24 hours.plummy wrote:I've left this to as late as I thought reasonable to announce that next Saturday/Sunday I will be making an attempt to take back the 24hr British Record taken away from me by C2 owing to an "oversight".

With all due respect - Concept 2 UK confirmed that I had set the record and that the previous record was 221k. (I spoke to them before and after the event last year) Therefore my target to beat was 221k, NOT 234k. If my target was 234k I would have rowed a different strategy surely as targeting 228k in 24 hours would a bit of a waste of time and effort.paulgould wrote:With all due respect, the British record was not yours to be taken away, as the "oversight" you mention involved. somebody having rowed further than you in 24 hours.plummy wrote:I've left this to as late as I thought reasonable to announce that next Saturday/Sunday I will be making an attempt to take back the 24hr British Record taken away from me by C2 owing to an "oversight".

Not trying to pick holes in your plan as you have done more of these than I have, but isn't 50 minutes per hour cutting it a bit fine?
2:33 pace is easy enough for the first half, but will be really difficult to maintain later on - maybe 55 minutes per hour, at least for the first 10-12 hours, to give yourself a buffer?

Re: Another 24!
Thank you for the apology Paul - it is well received.
Re the plan - yes, there isn't much fat on it but I intend to start at a faster pace than 2:33 rather than have shorter rests (and maybe add a minute here and there). This should slowly allow me to either row slower or take longer rests - whichever is most needed/wanted at the time
As long as I'm ahead of the curve, that's all I'm looking to manage on this one.
Assuming I'm still going I'm doing a full last hour so I get 10 minutes extra anyway

You will have plenty of time to adapt and revise your plan as required as you go along.
Once again, best of luck.

Dave - out of interest, how are you planning to while away the hours? Music? Or watching some films? Or quiet contemplation? Thinking there might be some strategies that you will be employing that I can use when I eventually tackle 10k or a 1 hour row
Really, this is just an amazing thing to do, I have complete faith that you will break the record

The above appears to function (can be viewed but not edited). There are three spreadsheet tabs at the bottom - one for me, one for Stuart Thorp and another that, as yet, may or may not be utilised depending on an injury status.
There appears to be no internet at this gym so it may be a problem to update. Hopefully I can use my mobile as a local WiFi hotspot and link my PC/IPAD via that route.

Just in case anyone has nothing better to do on Saturday this weekend and fancies dropping by to lend some moral support - here is the address for the attempt:
A1 Fitness Studios Ltd.

Mill Lane.

There will be three of us starting off and there are a couple of spare ergs I'm told (can't comment on the condition at this time). Starting around 9am on Saturday so hope to still be going at 9am Sunday

Re: Another 24!
Spent the afternoon trying to sort out all sorts of issues (e.g. loaned ergs arrived and were a disgrace and unusable). Had to come up with an emergency fix (thank you Jane - you are a star). Effectively the "spare" ergs are sat in the naughty corner now so anyone rocking up for a row will be disappointed
