500m Free Spirit ranking distance for February.

Post by hewitt »

Just stick your fastest 500m distance on here for February to place on the Concept2 Logbook. Absolutely EVERYBOBY is welcome to join in. The distance will change every month. Next month we will move to the 1k and then the 2k and so on.There is no pressure to enter a result but it may help you focus on your PB or SB and the Nonathlon.

We don't need to make a list of who is the fastest just post your personal time.
Everybody has a plan until they get a punch in the face.

This is something else but you can conbine it with that if you want.

This is a monthly challenge to get old and new Free Spirits to get involved with ranking distances and try to get a bit of team spirit back.

First attempt at a sprint in a long time. Aim was to get under 1:40, although for the first 150m or so, I thought I would do somewhat better.

In the end, I had to pull the stops out to just barely make my target - 1:39.9.

1:29.2 for me tonight.

I'd been debating all day whether to do the CTC today or have a go at this. Too much cider watching the rugby yesterday convinced me a hard 30 minutes wasn't a good idea, but I'd forgotten how hard 500m can feel. :o

After almost a year of trying to get back to something like fitness, and more than 2 years since I had to stop exercising completely, I am starting to get there. This is not a SB but neither was it maximum effort. Think more to come.

Many thanks for your kind words. I believe that it is going to take maybe another year to get anywhere near what I used to do as far as rowing is concerned. There are 2 main reasons:
1. Psychologically it is very difficult to deal with the most painful sport I have done, and I have done many over the decades
2. Having been through chemo and a stem cell transplant in 2011, the maintenance drug I have to take in 28 day cycles (3 weeks on 1 week off) affects my red blood count mid cycle, and by default my oxygen uptake. It therefore takes a great deal of mental and physical effort to overcome this, but short distances are easier, where I can use my power.

Regardless I am at about 90% of PB pace in rowing terms for 500m/1K/2K, but the other 10% might never happen, not the least of which I am 5 years older than when I set them.

My weight training has gone much better, in particular leg pressing (500kg for reps, ask Strider!), although I am not allowed to squat or deadlift anymore, which were significant for me, as having fixed my fractured vertebrae, the Consultant banned those exercises.

Anyway, I can see you are all progressing well, and I do hope to be sufficiently confident to attempt a comp this year, and hope to see you guys.

cheers

I gave this a shot over the weekend but I think I can do better. I'll give it another go tomorrow morning. I now go to a gym rather than a boathouse - it's definitely another layer of challenge to try to focus in that setting.
