Starnberg - 30min race

Post by Grobi »

Just a quick note to inform you that I will be racing in a 30min event next saturday in Starnberg (south of Munich). I'm way off PB form currently but decided to have a go nevertheless as it offers the rare opportunity of doing a venue race without travelling 1000k :D (in fact it's only 120k away from where I live).

Given my current state of fitness I'd be happy to end up near 7900m. So no spectacular performance to be expected from me, but a certain Mr. (or better: Signor) Michele Marullo has entered the 50-59 MHWT category. Some of you may have noticed that he had clocked 8771m for the february ctc which means he matched the world record which dates back from 2003. He is coming to Starnberg with no other purpose but to set a new world record  He will be actually racing in the 19-29 MHWT category (poor little boys, they have no idea whom they are messing with :D ), but I think that's probably down to his preferred time of day for his race/world record attempt.

I'll keep you informed, if you're interested you can find further details of the whole event here (sorry, homepage only in German): http://www.ergoregatta.de/

Thanks for posting this Peter and best of luck on Saturday :D

Yes Michele Marullo is a phenomenal rower, he has got closer to the great late Andy Ripley's 2k WR for 50 + of 6:07.7 set way back in 1998, with his 6:10.3 at Boston this year but I actually think he is better the longer he goes so have no doubt that the WR for 30 mins will be his by the end of the race :D

Good luck! Just enjoy the day - not so long since you were ill, so just take the day as it comes.

Good luck on Saturday Peter enjoy your 30 mins. On the subject of Michele I joined him for a couple of back to back 6ks on RP last week where he was at 1:41-2 for both, I think, so it looks like you are in for a treat.

He has contacted me twice about recording his ctc times for us, but doesnt appear to have got round to doing it yet. A little polite prodding might be a good idea Peter, if you get the chance.

Kirby, I do speak some italian, so I might probably be able to ask him in italian ("Signor Marullo, vorebbe cambiare al nostro team, si chiama Free Spirits?"), especially as we might have diner together. The problem is, I'm afraid, that he already joined the Row Pro Online team. Additionally there will be other members of Row Pro Online around during that diner. So my diner could be stopped after soup already :D

Peter, ordinarily I would agree that poaching other team members is very bad form, but he has shown an interest in us in the last month (he emailed me twice) so its not a case of us poaching him. Maybe you could just ask him if he got my replies. Up to you of course, dont do anything you are uncomfortable with.

Thank you Neil, good to read from you again. I have been watching your progress over the current season by the way, you nearly beat all my PBs by now, well done! =D> But don't feel too safe too soon :D :fswink:

Stan, I will see what I can do. Asking Michele Marullo if he got your replies looks like a good plan to me. If I don't report back here on Monday by the latest it apparently didn't work

Peter good luck this weekend!

I met Michele at B's and he was very nice. Before my race he stood near Odd who was videotaping for me, and snapped some photos. I never thought to ask Odd if they talked about FS. After my race he came back and introduced himself (he probably thought I was a nut as I was in a state of post-race euphoria). I had no idea he would recognize my name from our RP outings. We all know him because he is fast, but as I am a member of the "quite a bit behind" club never thought he would know my name. Of course maybe it was just the FS kit I had on. Easy to spot from anywhere in the arena.

I don't really think talking up the team is poaching. I think we get people who want more than the other teams offer; the forum, meterboard, and support are here in abundance.

Mille grazie Kirby, purtroppo parlo solo l'inglese e un po d'italiano. Ho imparato latino e greco a scuola, ma ho dimenticato il maggiore parte delle queste lingue.

Back from Starnberg after an exciting day at the races. 271 competitors were there and the atmosphere was helped by loud and encouraging music being played all the time. I never went to an indoor race with music played in the background (well, it was so loud, I should say foreground) and I was afraid it might distract me from the rowing and the race plan. Actually it didn't do that too much as the ergs were behind the loudspeakers.

My own race went to plan most of the time. The plan was to start at around 1:55 pace for the first ten minutes, then 1:54 for the next ten minutes, 1:53 for the next five and then empty the tanks. The problem was the terribly dry air. I'd say way drier than at BIRC. After two minutes already my mouth was burning. Nevertheless I could stick to my race plan for the first 25 minutes. Unfortunately the final five minutes were really ugly and I couldn't push any harder, the question "why am I doing this?" came up too often. My result in the end were 7859m which at least was an SB by 3m and meant 6th place out of 12 competitors.

But there were other much more noticeable performances there. One was shown by a joung girl who is also member of my otw rowing club. She won her category with 7429m (460m ahead of 2nd place), not bad for a 16 year old girl!

And then of course there was the performance of Michele Marullo. This guy is really huge! I'd guess 1.95 or even 2m tall! And he is determined! He sat on the erg, started his race at 1:30 for the first ten strokes and then settled into 1:42 pace throughout the entire race! Some low 1:30s in the finish sprint meant a massive 8836m after 30 mins, which means he set a new world record for his age category of 50-59 MHWT (old one was 8771m). A massive performance indeed! And I can tell you, even super rowers suffer!

In the evening we had diner together with him (guess what super rowers like mostly after a race: it's not pasta, it's knuckle of pork!). I talked to him regarding Free Spirits and he repeated his wish to join our team. He explained that he had (and still has) problems changing his team affiliation on the C2 logbook. We exchanged emailadress and phone numbers so that hopefully I can help him to solve that problem :fswink:

Edit: I'd like to upload some pics, but I get the message "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."?

Great performance there Peter, impressive performance. Thanks also for talking to Michele - a world record  Any chance of getting the young lady to join us as well - she would give Catherine a run for her money as well. Actually she would give plenty of us guys a run for our money too!

Great SB Peter - congratulations =D> =D>

Michele Marullo broke his own world record there (set in February). He looks to be some power house.

He also has a fine motto.

Well done Peter - an SB is a brilliant result and given that the air was so dry even the better for it. Many congrats and thank you for flying the FS flag alone.

Is there a link for all the results?

Peter, a few people have reported that problem now and I have also encountered it today. I got round the problem by erasing a few of my earlier attachments. I am not sure if the upload limit is per person or per thread or per board - Thomas is the man to ask on that issue. Try erasing an older attachment and then see if you can upload the new one.
