Happy to get you excited, Jane - though "it was completely unintentional"...  (happy also there wasn´t some perverse meaning of the word...  :fswink: ).

Anyways - training going well - though not so much OTE... Saturday 45k OTW, Sunday shaved of another minute of my cycling route - now 31´55"... Today 15k OTW in 1x, best 1x session from me so far... 8)

These days I´m doing mostly OTW in "my" single sculler... Making huge improvements - though obviously still a lot to learn... And excited about I´m going to do my first OTW race next Saturday: 1k in 1x. Hoping for at least a sub 6:20...

Hope training is going well for you Jon at the moment - at least the ctc this month should be up your alley...

Thanks a lot, Zoot :!: :D

Going well is maybe a matter of view point and definition - but definitely not as bad as it used to be... :fswink:

Erik, hope your race goes well, and hope the water isn't as choppy as it was in Rio :)

Thanx, Jan :!:

Actually, yesterday I trained in what seemed worse conditions than in Rio  the wind was 10m/s and intermittently even stronger than that... Fortunately I was wise enough to turn around so it only came to 3k. Today I was training starts, and at a certain point my shoulders were so tired that I couldn´t hold the boat above water, so had to go for a little swim...   Before in an earlier attemt I saw a speed of 14.6k/hr on my gps, my fastest sofar, hoping I can hit 15k/hr one of the coming days... :D

Bad wheather conditions for single sculling in Denmark these last few days :!: Monday I was barely out, but my boat was thrown to whatever side the wind wanted, couldn´t steer it and couldn´t row it, so went back again immediately... A little worse Tuesday, which made me say no, despite my coach insisting otherwise. Today a little bit better, 7-8 m/sec, and still wind blows a lot harder than that, but found a "safe harbour" in the harbour, and a lot of turns got me to 7k in total. Good feeling to become friends with my boat once again :!: :D :D

Ooops, sorry all Free Spirits :!: Heavy wind at the starting area, and also a bit from the side, made it very difficult for me to steer the boat towards the start... Fell in the water once got up on the starting bridge, for another try, hoping starter would be able to hold the boat in the next attempt, but couldn´t, was ordered to row away from the starting bridge to stop colliding with it, barely made it, but was pushed more and more to the side. After some time the referee lost patience, and I was offered the chance to row on one free lane. But still couldn´ felt steer the boat in the right direction, and after another struggle fell in the water for the second time... The referee sayed he would order a motor boat to come and pick me and my boat up. It came after some 10 minutes, a bit cold after I got totally wet. Not the ways I would have hoped my first OTW race to go, but certainly some experiences richer and much room for improvement... :fswink:

Very frustrating Erik. Sounds like a classic "what doesn't kill us makes us stronger" experience.

Erik, well done for keeping trying, and hopefully next time the weather will be calmer and your next start will be a success

Erik, considering the difficult conditions, that was an heroic attempt at your first OTW race. =D>

Good luck for the future - I'm sure the god of the water will smile favourably upon you. :)

Good to see a post from Jane as well. :)

Thanks, Jill :!: :!:

At least I´m back to "training" in the single sculler. Though wheather is very nice - 8) - conditions proved very difficult. Yesterday we decided not to keep in front of a big coaster, which made not so big waves - but still very muddy waters, that goes from bank to bank - pretty difficult when stream comes from both sides, sometimes at the same time. At a certain point there was an annoying sound - but I couldn´t detect exactly where it came from... Took it easy on the boat on the way home - then close to the rowing club I made some "powerful" (sic) starts... Suddenly there was a crack and I went into the water. Swimming back to the club - only 50m - I could see that both oars were on the same side of the boat - very tricky. When we got the boat up I could see that a thing that supports the rigs had cracked - luckily not so difficult to "repair" - that is - putting a new piece of that thing ("stræber" in Danish). And today there was another coaster on its way out the harbour, but that was about the least of my problems - ´cause of many, many speed boats, especially on the way back the waves and stream kept bouncing from one side to the other. A good thing, though, was that I didn´t fall into the water, but probably more luck than anything else...

Erik, calm water rowing is for wimps, real men row in the waves

Still looking forward to the day when passing a big ocean coaster doesn´t cause me some bad nerves... :^o

Can´t help being a whimp - but had another trip today in 1x. Fortunately the water was much calmer for little me :!: 8) You know what they say: a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor (Jane - correct if I´m wrong   ) - and today my technique was much better that it has ever been (not that it is any good  ) :!: :D :D

It´s the beginning of the end of the warm OTW season. So I think I´d better start concentrating a bit on the OTE side of the business... Got me a Garmin HR watch and it seems to be delivering some reliable data. Looking forward to the September ctc (or maybe not... ) - and in the meantime I will be doing some 5ks. I have been wearing the HR belt a couple of times on the erg now, and a bit shocked to see how soon the numbers rise... Anyways - today 17:42.8 and Av.HR was 145 and maxed at 160 during the last 200m :!:

Went much better HR wise today, hit 151 towards the end of the 4th k, and was then able to get it down under 150 again on the last k at 1:50 pace, AvHR was about 140: 17:50.8 29spm :D

Coming along very nicely, Erik! For a while there, I was afraid you were going to have to trade in your single sculler for a sea kayak!

Hi all... long time no post  and an equally long time without any signifcant erging

Big hello to old friends   and huge respect to Erik who has kept this thread going almost single-handedly for much of the intervening years ^O^ ^O^

In the last few years, I've spent a lot more time running (with the occasional bit of swimming and cycling thrown in too!), and have been really enjoying the feeling of just heading outside and running :D I even got a couple of marathons under my belt, and it was all going so well until I ignored a twinge in the Achilles and did the Snowdon race anyway  Over two months later, and I've done very little running, with a stubborn Achilles problem, combined with Plantar Faciitis, and pain whose location seems more likely to be the flexor retinaculum :? An appointment with the podiatrist is on the horizon, and in the meantime, I figured it was time to dust off the old metal mistress

I've done a couple of session pw forthe last few weeks, essentially 30' and 10k sessions. I'm unlikely to do much fast stuff, but the pace is gradually improving currently looking at around 1:51 / 1:52 for the 30'/10k respectively (weight sitting around 85kg at the moment, so very much a "middleweight" )

Not sure how long I'll be erging, but likely to be a few times pw for the next few weeks, and hoping to maintain at least a session or two pw thereafter. I can't promise to be posting here regularly, but thought it'd be rude not to look in and say hi

Hi Mat, nice to see you!
No goal of a sub 17 5k this time then?

Hello Matt,

Great to hear from you! And glad to hear you haven't been totally slacking off over the past few years!

I think of you from time to time... or more accurately I think about those 'cottages' you and your wife used to rent. Do you still rent them?

Cheers,
zoot

HI Rodger, and thanks for the welcome back  I don't think there's any chance of a sub 17' this time around [-X  I think I'd need a good few months of consistent erg training to get anywhere close, and I'm hoping that I'll be back running again before long 8-[ There's a chance sub 18' may be on the cards before too long but I think I'll be happy with that :D

Good to hear from you Zoot  We do still have our cottages here on Anglesey at http://www.cerrigybarcud.co.uk. It's been a pretty busy season which has been great, and now we're almost at that time of year when thoughts turn to the off-season refurb period which will be busy in a whole different way

Tried an 8 x 1k r1.5' yesterdayand came in with an average of 1:46.5. Not sure what to read into that, but it hurt as much as I remember
