Further update - have now found a nice friend to give me a lift to the venue, so will be racing afterall.
Wish me luck!!! This will be my first race in over 18 months, and I'm more than a bit nervy at the moment. Also 2.5k is a horrible distance!
Will post the results when I have recovered.

Cheers for all the messages of support guys.
The good news is that I made it to the race, and even did ok (and got a PB in the process).
I had the honour of racing against Graham Benton, the current UK and World Champion. I think I managed to finish within a minute of him, but it was all a bit hazy. I also got to row next to Jo Lyons, an upcoming star of women's rowing, who was only about 10m behind me after a couple of minutes!
Made it through to the end, and finished 5th (I think) in 8:31.0 behind Mr Benton, Pete Marston, someone I couldn't catch the name of, and Jon Goodall. Pretty pleased with this, as these guys are all much quicker than me.
Haven't had chance to look at my HR values for the race yet, but felt curiously relaxed up to the final sprint. Came over the line splitting 1:27 and rating forty something SPM.
All in all a good return to racing for me. Thanks again for all you support. This one was for all the Free Spirits!

Thomas, if I pull that it BIRC, I'll be reasonably happy. Only managed 1:41.6 in 2004, and 1:41.2 is my all time PB (to date), and I have a reasonable amount of race practice and training experience. But go for it. I'm confident you can hit 6:50, and that's only 1:42.5.
Got my race splits data now:
1st 500m - 1:42.8 (1:42.8 ) - 29 SPM
2nd 500m - 1:43.6 (3:26.4) - 30 SPM
3rd 500m - 1:42.9 (5:09.3) - 31 SPM
4th 500m - 1:42.5 (6:51.8 ) - 32 SPM
5th 500m - 1:39.2 (8:31.0) - 34 SPM (and over the line at 1:27.7!)
Av Split 1:42.2, Av SPM 31.2
Found the rowing action smoother on the model D than it is on my model C at home, and this helped me to keep a slightly higher stroke rate/pace without getting tired.
Was also the first time I've ever raced outdoors, which was quite nice really with a gentle cooling breeze.
Will download the HRM data in a bit and see what that says. Didn't feel too bad, until the final 500m when I was upping the pace, so it may be that I had a bit more left that I should have used.
Was torn between 1:43 and 1:42 as a target pace, and the result shows this pretty much.

Now have the HRM data, and it shows a nice controlled rising HR for the race, which fits in with the progressive negative splitting race plan. Hit 190 at the end in the sprint finish, so maybe didn't have so much spare after all!!!
