In the theme of the 20k a day extreme league, I am going to set up a blatant copy cat but with a slight twist.
20k a day for those on target for 3m + a season is great.
Those who are looking to get a lesser total however will see perhaps 15k or 10k or even 5k a day as an achievement. I am therefore thinking about where the breaks should be.
We are a third of the way through the season and the main holidays (at least in Europe) behind us. Therefore somebody with 500k to date should be looking at 1.5m for the season. I am therefore thinking that a 15k a day is a challenge. Using this logic somebody with less than 333k to date should be able to score for a 10k, and with less then 250k = 5k.
Coming right down, less than 100k to date should perhaps be at 2500m?
I would be interested in hearing, before I post it, your views on;
1. Is this sensible?
2. Should it wait until the ELM board is a little clearer at the end of the month?
3. How we can get more interest from our team mates on ELM (perhaps by scoring this challenge for them and showing the results)?
An alternative would be to score a point for each 5% of your total at the end of the previous month that you do in a month. e.g. end of August is say 500k, score 1 for 25K in Sept, 2 for 50K, etc. This could be renewed each month.
This is progressively harder as the season rolls forward at the speed of time.

Some interesting ideas there!
The only issue I've so far found with the 20k a day challenge is that I can't be bothered to update it every day (or every day I actually do 20k!) and it is a pain to go back through my log book and work out which days I can count. I know Mr Sims has his in a clever spreadsheet, but the format of my equivalent doesn't make it easy to work out at the moment.
So in summary, these type of things are fine, but quite high maintenance compared to other ELM challenges. You could also do a point per day you row (similar to the concept 2 March Madness) as that's quick and easy to work out.
Maybe we need some form of handicapped racing times to give added incentive to everyone. Mind you, this is sort of covered already with improvement points (although those are actually heavily biased towards people who've not rowed much and hence have relatively soft PBs and against those who have been good and are trying to get back there again, as I have been this season).
I did put some weight adjusted stuff in, to try to spice up the order of the participants and stop the giants getting top of everything, but not had much interest so far.

5'11", 50 - older, slower, greyer, fatter (and needs to update the sig times too)

Lots of ways of doing it!
One of the real charms of ELM is that it rewards with improvement points as well as absolute.
Those at the top will have a similar (or possibly worse!) chance of improving.
ELM also rewards participation - that's how I got to the top (once).
Crap times, but I had a go at everything there was.
Added benefit - this really annoyed Mr Glynn
So, I don't think we need to be too clever with it, just make sure there are a wide variety of challenges to suit all tastes and include improvement vs something else where possible.
I know some don't want handicapping, e.g. Michelle wants to compete on a level base - but then she beats a lot of the guys anyway!
(btw, If I could find a way of sharing files on our web site, I would offer my spreadsheets up to all).
I reckon the Free Spirits (Standard) league should contain all the Ranking distances and be open for the whole season, i.e. 500m, 1000m, 2000m, 5000m, 10000m, 30 mins, 1 hour etc.
Extreme could be set for 1/2 marathons and over
Fun is for unusual "light relief" challenges
Is there a gap for another?
Free Spirits Extreme Sprints? Nothing over 5k perhaps?
Or is it getting too complicated again?

Dont do yourself down Peter - I would not call somebody who has just clocked up 50k+ in the last 2 days a lazy bugger.

Why have gaps? Why not a time based challenge where you enter the percentage of the previous month's metres?webberg wrote:Those who are looking to get a lesser total however will see perhaps 15k or 10k or even 5k a day as an achievement. I am therefore thinking about where the breaks should be.

My suggestion
Anything you like, but let's kick it all off at the end of September.
Suggest we just stop using Free Spirits (rename it or something) and create a new one....to run until the end of this year.
Keep Extreme and Fun - cos they are a little specialist.
