Paul, how is your knee feeling this morning and when do you see your physio again and what did he say about your shoulder?

How is Jennifer getting on - I like to think that she's sitting ( as comfortably as possible under the circumstances ) with a recipe book in hand, calling out instructions to the apprentice chef who might possibly have a glass ( a small one of course ) of something or other in his hand. Think Keith Floyd.

Physio said that both my knee and my shoulder will probably improve over time if I keep doing the exercises we gave me. He said that I could try rowing again to see if it exacerbates the knee soreness and to stop if this proves to be the case. Kind of frustrating.

Jennifer is gradually recovering from her operation. Her foot is still quite sore, but it's getting better. I haven't started my culinary lessons yet. We went to her sister's house for dinner on Sunday and our next door neighbour dropped in a lasagna for yesterday's dinner. The one thing I am doing is becoming a lot more familiar with the layout of our local supermarket.

I'm due to go to Portugal on Friday (there's an owners' meeting coming up that I ought to attend), but I don't want to abandon Jennifer. She is saying that she wants me to go, but I haven't checked in online yet (although tickets were paid for some time back). It's a bit of a dilemma.

Thanks for asking. Jennifer is on the mend, but it's a slow process. She's seeing the surgeon on Friday and hopefully he'll be happy with how things are progressing.

I'm in Portugal for that meeting I mentioned. I was OK after doing the 1k challenge and did another 11k in total the following day, withour any increased soreness. I went for a long walk on Monday (slightly over 7 miles) and decided to take a day off the erg. Yesterday I woke up with a rotten cold and was unable to do much of anything. Feeling a bit better today and hope to get some erging in tomorrow.

I injured both my left shoulder and my left knee during my travels in New Zealand in January/February and I've been going to the physio every week or two since I got back. My shoulder injury hasn't really affected my rowing as it's only sore if I try to raise my arm above shoulder height. But it hasn't improved significantly and, as it's now 3 months since I sustained the initial injury, my physio referred me to my GP for a cortisone injection, which I had done on Tuesday afternoon.

He told me to call him afterwards, but I couldn't get hold of him until this morning. He said that I should not put any strain on the shoulder for several days after the injection and that I should not do any rowing until next Monday at the earliest (now he tells me!). I did a session on Wednesday (10 x 600m as part of the FM plan) but nothing yesterday and I now won't be able to do this month's IRL or have a final attempt at the CTC. :evil: I guess I could do a gentle 500m paddle just to put in a score, but I should probably follow his advice as I don't want this to become a long term problem.

My knee injury is also still bothering me and is probably something I'm going to have to learn to live with. It may mean that I will have to abandon any hopes of beating my old PBs, but who knows?

I am so sorry to hear this. Nagging and lingering injuries can be a thoroughly demoralizing experience. :twisted: It's probably best to follow the doctor's advice for now... even though the inactivity will drive you crazy.

As my friend Gandalf once said, in a slightly different context: "Courage will now be your best defence against the storm that is at hand — that and such hope as you can muster." :-k

Hi Paul - they'll be plenty more IRLs and CTCs - better to be sensible now, then risk not taking part in them at all.

Funnily enough, I was about to ask you how things are progressing with Jennifer?

Jennifer had the pins taken out of her foot last week and she's a lot more mobile since then. Still wearing the surgical boot, but able to hobble around without crutches, although still not able to walk any distance. She's seeing the surgeon again next week for a check up.

I'm toying with the idea of doing a very "soft" IRL, although I know that's pretty insane, so hopefully I won't succumb to the temptation.

Zoot is obviously of the same opinion as myself and I bet we are not alone in our thinking.

A “ soft “ IRL challenge - is there such a thing? Although, under these circumstances, not giving into temptation is a far greater challenge. 8) :fsbgrin: :fswink:

My missing mojo is in "manageable" mode so I haven't quite chucked the towel in yet but eased off the metres and pressure on myself to do anything bar keep moving and help the team with the CTC because numbers are more important than speed.

What's adding to my woes is I've been struggling with tennis elbow for about 6~7 weeks and it's not getting any better. Ibuprofen takes the edge off but that's about all it does. I did the 200, 100 & 400 for the CTC today and really aggravated it. So much so I'm not sure when I'll try the 300 to make up a full time.

Hi Dave, sorry to hear about your injury trouble.
It must be tempting to complete that last 300m for the CTC, but I'm sure you'll get a better result if you take a break for a few days to let your elbow recover.

Dave sorry to hear it. Full empathy. Do catch it quickly, don't let it progress. My elbow became a problem during the first Crazy Bear. I'm not much for ibuprofen but I did do ice and went to the chiro for an ultrasound session or two. They did massage, but focused on the forearm muscles, which I found interesting, and up in the shoulder not so much the elbow itself. After those treatments I still felt it but not as badly. I figured it might flare up for last year's Crazy Bear and decided I would opt out if it did. I also iced proactively. Very oddly, the elbow improved to zero pain during & after that challenge, which seemed to me counter-intuitive at best, and quite a surprise.

It does remind me it is there -- every so often in the night I wake up and the elbow is numb, but fine the next day. So... don't let it get a grip.

Glad to hear the mojo is hanging on.

Thanks Erik (and all) - I did the 300m yesterday but favoured my left side to get through it. Oddly, I held a pace better than I did the first 200 on Saturday so if I do another attempt, it will be at the 200m distance only.

I've not taken any painkillers for 2 days as I'd rather not take them unless absolutely necessary. We'll see what tomorrow's training brings... :?

Reporting in with tendonitis of the wrist which just wont go away.

I have been off the erg for a month, but I keep doing other stuff like gardening and typing that aggravates it. The Dr recommended some stretch exercises and unrecommended strapping etc. Has anyone had any experience of things that helped

My plan now is to go really light for really short pieces until I find a limit that I can live with. I may have to go and find a bike while it sorts itself out.

Suggestion is also stretching, and then going easy on the erg for a start and looking at proper technique. If you have seen any videos of me erging you might see some twisted wrists - which is not good...

I never had it before either and I've done a lot of rowing - don't know where it came from

Will just give myself a couple of weeks off being really careful and try the exercises

I got one of these (the green one from Amazon) when I was suffering from tennis elbow - which is just tendinitis of the outer forearm tendons.

I have the green one too. :D Totally forgot about it. I used it for the elbow. Like you, Ron, not sure it's what helped. Maybe in conjunction with the ultrasound, massage, ice, time... etc.

Mark as a college rower I had the wrist tendinitis. It was :evil: and took quite awhile to resolve. Ice & ultrasound at the PT, back then. And a brace I'm sure.

I put myself also in a position to write into this sadly topic :roll: . Last weekend, the last hot summer weekend, garden party by friends, 4 Zoigl-Beer later i thought: lets jump into the pool- unfortunately- gras is slippery when wet- i slipped away one step before jumping and crashed against the pool border: so one ruptured ankle-ligament and a broken rib...thats it...and i hoped to catch up to my old paces in November...now i have to rest for at least 4-6weeks... :? After small injuries and deseases (2-3w rest)this is the longest rest period for me since many years...really anoying,I can feel with those who experienced the same and wish all of you a quick restitutio ! :)

Sounds painful, Claudius! I guess your friends' initial laughter at your slip fell silent quickly.
Best with the recovery! 4-6 weeks is not too bad.
