Hey JS,

Port and Brandy............phef What you need is a large Bacardi & Coke, plenty of ice and slice of lemon. You see the lemon is citric and will help.

I reckon 4 -5 and you'll be feeling a lot better

Had hoped never to post on this thread  No idea what I have done to my knee - I rowed on Sunday with no problems. Had a day off on Monday with no issues. Tuesday it was a niggle which gradually worsened through the day. I rowed slowly and it felt ok but I now realise I should not have done it because this morning I can feel the knee is swollen and painful. The pain is located just above the left knee. There is no pain if I extend the leg straight - it only hurts when sitting down and bending the knee - hence rowing is out of the question. I can slowly walk without pain and providing I keep the leg straight it will support my weight without pain. Any advice/tentative diagnoses gratefully received. I will now develop some sense and not row until its cleared up

Stan,

Sounds like you might possibly have dislocated the kneepcap slightly (a sudden jarring or unexpected lateral pressure on it recently perhaps?)

When I dislocated mine a couple of years ago, it tore all the tendons above it that hold it in place in its groove. This led to a lot of bruising and tenderness above the kneecap / bottom of the quad.

Mine was quite major as I managed to tear pretty much everything holding the kneecap in place from above and it left me in a knee brace for six weeks, but the general symptoms are similar to what you've described.

My only advice would be to get it looked at by a specialist if the "niggle" continues for more than a few days.
Bad luck, and I hope it clears it'self.

Stan, sounds like a bruised synovial cartlidge or a tear in the vascous medialis.

Is the pain like a dull ache or does it spike in certain positions?

A dull ache is bruising and a sharper pain a tear.

A bruise is about 10 days to heal. A tear might be 6/8 weeks.

I suggest that you ice the knee in the evening and take some ibubrofen type medication. A compression bandage might help as well. If it's a bruise then do nothing for a week and try again.

If you have a tear, then you need to see somebody. I can recommend a good surgeon but hopefully you won't have to go that far.

I'm in the consult a specialist camp - if it still gives problems after a week - 2 max then you should get a proper medical opinion..

I'm one of the worst to be preaching that but I'm sure its the right thing to do!

Hope it does clear up soon - don't want to see your progress stopped by anything too serious!

All the best

Thanks for the good wishes and opinions everyone. I have overdosed on ibuprofen and sacrificed a bag of frozen spinach. I will see how it is tomorrow and then see my gp if no signs of it improving.
I would not say the pain is sharp Graham which I think is a good sign - more a dull ache. It just feels extremely tight when trying to bend the leg - probably the swelling.

diclofinax (forgive spelling), I will find right spelling on drug bottle at home.

That does the job for me - Thanks to rugby injuries over the years, I can go to bed in as perfect condition as a 36 year old front row forward can be, yet wake the next morning with a knee that hardly bends. Pop a couple of the above mentioned drugs, and by lunchtime I am ready to rock...

Also good for tennis elbow type pain, ankle pain, any pain you can feel in general...!!

Oh, and advice - harden up

Hi Bartman - you are thinking of diclofenac (commercial name in UK is Voltarol) - a powerful NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) - I used to have to take that for gout - yes it is extremely effective and I wish I still had some - it is a prescription only medicine. It can be applied as a cream but thats less effective than the tablets. However the good news is that I have woken up this morning and the pain and swelling are very much reduced, although not completely gone so the ibuprofen is beginning to work. Hopefully I can get back on the rower over the weekend - I would like 24-48 hours pain free first though (sorry does that mean I am still a wimp? )

Be careful of that diclofenac. It's sodium based and as such may play havoc with your usual "movements".

A dull ache is better than a pain but rest and no pain for 48 hours is good. Keep icing the area to reduce the swelling (peas are better than spinach).

May just be a jar that has caused the inflammation. Otherwise you might be looking at some wear and tear damage.

If you try the rower again and it comes back, try moving the foot plates up/down. If the pain persists it's probably a bruise. If it backs off, that might indicate a wear and tear condition like arthritis.

In any event if it comes back - see the GP.

Hope you are getting better Stan.

I am totally hacked off today. Worst case thinking, I think I have given myself some sort of lower groin hernia (Inguinal hernia). I was happily rowing away, jumped off for 10-15mins to do some bits and pieces (video Cranford for MBH!!) and then jumped back on, 2 min warmup and then a heavy start on a 30minR20. 5mins later, it was very very sore and I had to stop. Tuesday was almost unbearable but Ibuprofen and heat that night made a big difference but the pain is back today, not as bad a Tuesday but very uncomfortable.

I think I need to see someone (see what my 'GP' says tonight when she gets back home today, she better watch that bl**dy Cranford and enjoy it!)

I seem to have cold this morning as well

Off to wallow in it
Cheers

Dave, that sounds...... nasty
You don't want to risk things getting worse in that area!

I'm really hacked off at the moment - tried a very gentle 15mins on Monday, thought it was OK, but then rib got sore again in the following days (as in disturbing sleep sore). Tried driving the coaching lauch yesterday.....OK, but it was pointed out that as the engines often cut out I couldn't go in a launch on my own as pulling the starter cord is an action I definintely can't do yet!

Argh!

Hoping to get back on the rower tomorrow. The knee feels a lot better. I will take it slowly and stop if the pain comes back.
Janet hope the rib gets better soon. Dave O - hows the hernia?

Hi Stan,

Hope you get back to rowing tomorrow, don't over do the knee first day back!

So far the med advice is it is not a hernia 'just' an infected and therefore inflammed gland. Feels way too sore for that, but that is two medical opinions.
I have a week on two different antibiotics and then one more week on just the one. Told rowing might have to wait, I would love to row but crouching or squats are agony just now. I will see how things go for a few days.

Cheers, thanks for asking

2 gentle (warmup pace) 15 minute rows. No immediate adverse reaction so hopefully everything will soon be back to normal. [-o<

Not certain what I've done but I appear to have damaged something just below the bottom of my left shoulder blade such that it "clunks" at the end of the drive when I pull the handle in to my chest. It happened 3 days ago initially but as I couldn't row again until last night (as I was away) I didn't think anymore of it.

The Pete Plan strategy had already suffered owing to being away so I tried the "hard 10k" and managed 6.6k at 1:57 pace and handled down as it was really bugging me. It's a bit sore this morning so may have to rest up as I have a training session appointment with Tom Kay on Saturday.

Hope everything turns out ok Plummy. Agree you should rest up rather than row with a niggle - I learned that the hard way a couple of weeks ago. Would be interested to hear how you get on with Tom Kay.
