Sorry to hear that, Kirby. Any idea how long you'll be out of action?

Thanks for the well wishes guys. Paul, I don't have any timetable yet on recovery other than that I will be doing no more than "modified" read: light duties till Christmas and then a reassessment. Also, the orthopedic (sp?) specialist needs to see me but apparently that might be several weeks. There's ice everwhere here and last night we had a bout of freezing rain. I actually preferred the weather we used to get when I was a kid; it really was consistently cold thru the winter so we would almost never have icy conditions before March. Global warming sucks, every year now we have an extended period of very treacherous conditions because of winter thaws.

Just an update on my knee here. It's been nearly six weeks since I injured myself. I spent nearly the first month on crutches and sore as crap. Sleeping has been a bit of an ordeal. Anyway, the early diagnosis from two different doctors was a grade 2 sprain of the MCL. But the almighty Workers Compensation Board (WCB) who are paying my wages at the moment was not happy with my rate of progress and sent me to one of their doctors who watched me walk for about 10 seconds and concluded I had torn cartilage. The WCB has a lot of pull, read money, and I was MRI'd the following day. The diagnosis of torn cartilage has been confirmed and I will be undergoing arthroscopic surgery to remove the offending cartilage within the next week or two I believe. And I did also sprain the MCL. I have been rowing 2k slowly as it does not hurt much and keeps me from losing my mind along with about 15' on my wife's stationary bike. My rowing stroke looks bizarre as the right knee even now will not sit flat at the finish. If anyone is interested I will keep you informed of my progress on this thread.

That's bad news Kirby, but at least now you're getting something done to fix it. Hopefully the surgery will fix the problem and will allow you to make a full recovery before too long. Did they give any indication of how long you will have to wait after the surgery before you can get back to rowing (I presume those easy 2ks will have to stop for a while)?

Thanks for the interest Boris and Paul.
Paul, I don't know yet when I could get back to rowing after the surgery because I haven't talked to the orthopaedic surgeon but it will be on my list of questions for him/her. I know this procedure is usually relatively non-invasive but my GP looked at the MRI report and said there's signicant tearing in there so I could be in for a bit of a long haul. :(

Sorry to hear that the damage is quite serious but at least it's more clearly identified now. The fact you can row a bit must be a relief from going completely stir crazy off the erg. I hope the procedure goes well and your return to fitness is a swift one.

I had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus cartilage in my knee nearly 30 years ago and it was entirely successful.

I wish you a problem free procedure and quick recovery.

Thanks for inquiring about my health, Boris. Not too much for an update but I will be having the surgery next Wednesday. I will be a medial meniscus lighter and hopefully my knee will then be able to fully extend. The recovery period is usually 6 weeks or so. I opted not to have ACL reconstruction at this time as the recovery is so long, maybe another time. In the meantime I've been instructed not to row, so I am doing some very slow arms only rowing in addition to 20 minutes of cycling or so per day.

Thanks as well to Ann, Dave, Alan, Roger, Barbara, Greg and Michelle for the well wishes. Greg, it was heartening to know that you have gone 30 (!) years with no issues from a similar procedure.

Back to the physio for me today. I have been suffering intermittent lower back pain for quite a while, but it became much worse a few days ago. After hobbling around the place for a couple of days, it reached a point last night where I was limping so badly, I called my physio for an appointment.

I saw him this morning and he tells me I have an inflammation in my lower back. He gave me some exercises to do and said that the inflammation should go down in a couple of days. In the meantime, it's OK to do some gentle erging, but I should stop altogether if the pain gets worse or if it hasn't gone back to normal in two days time. (Normal for me is having a bit of back ache when I get up in the mornings, but it generally clears up after I have been up and about for 20 minutes or so).

I'm seeing him again on Monday morning. I hope this isn't the start of another saga. [-o<

I'm sorry to read about your lower back problems, Paul. I wish the best for you and that it's hopefully a tiny little hick-up which will be forgotten very soon. [-o< [-o< At least you can do (in the meaning that the physio didn't forbid it) some gentle rowing. =D>

Kirbs, I hope the Op was a success this week and good luck with the rehab mate

Paul, really sorry to hear about your back.

I wonder if your injuries might be connected in that perhaps the shoulder injury that caused you so much grief led to an overcompensation in other areas of your body.

When this latest episode is resolved I would recommend seeking out a Concept 2 accredited instructor to observe your rowing technique (I know mine is rubbish even though I completed the C2 Instructor's course !)

All the best with it anyway whatever you decide :D

Bad to hear, Paul. There's nothing good about this sort of pain. Good luck and rest. Sometimes it's the much needed rest that we neglect.
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

Having been told I could do some eging as long as I took it easy, I did a just row today for just under 35 minutes. Probably went a bit faster than I should have - 8824m @ 1:58.9 pace. If I get an adverse reaction, I'll know I was being foolish. If I don't get an adverse reaction, I'll probably do something even more foolish tomorrow. [-X  #-o

Seriously though, it's probably my head that needs examining, rather than my back.

I decided not to do any erging yesterday. My back wasn't too bad today (a bit of a twinge, but I wasn't listing to the side like a drunken sailor, which is a big improvement on Friday  ), so I decided to do another just row. Felt a bit stiff at the start, but I felt fine after I'd warmed up, so I ended up doing 16355m @ 1:59.2 pace.

Back to the physio tomorrow morning. Hope to get the all clear as I still have to do 2500m for this month's IRL challenge and I'd also like to have a go at the Facebook 4 x 750m challenge.
