As the person who has posted quotes from Casablanca (on more than one occasion, I think), I could hardly fail to guess the film after your last set of clues. Apart from Bogie, I think Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre were also in both films and there may well have been others. I don't think I ever saw the entire film, although I have watched Casablanca more than once - It's one of those films you can watch over and over again.

Anyway, enough of that. How about this one?

A: Your boss is quite the card player. How does he do it?
B: He cheats!

Paul, trying to figure this one out has now left me with mince for brain cells. Although I haven't watched the DVD for ages, is it The Sting?

Thank you Paul.

Easy one - this film was based on a book given to me for my tenth birthday.

" You'd be but a fierce young hound indeed, if at your time of life you could help to hunt a wretched warmint, hunted as near death and dunghill as this poor wretched warmint is."

Neither Paul, the story is set in England and written by an English author.

Actually, that sounds like the kind of thing Uriah Heep would say. Is it David Copperfield?

No Paul it isn't.

More clues: part of the story is set amongst cobwebs and decay, madness, malice and revenge.

OK. I think I can make an educated guess. It's probably not one of his less well known works. It's definitely not Oliver Twist or the Pickwick Papers or A Christmas Carol.

So how about Great Expectations? Wasn't there a scene early in the book/film where a very young Pip was met by an escaped convict, who many years later ended up being his secret benefactor?

I knew that you would get there in the end Paul. :) =D>

As a child, I was attracted to the story because some of it is set in Kent, around the Medway towns, where all my late mother's family have lived for several generations.

Your turn.

That would explain why there is a "Dickens World" "attraction" just around the corner from my head office on the Medway City Estate. You can safely assume I've never set foot in the place :-)

And ... you never will have the chance now to experience some ' Kent Kultchar ' because according to Wikipedia, the place closed down in October 2016 and went into administration.

I think that we can also safely assume that Dickens would never have set foot in the place either. Not even to visit Pizza Hut. :fswink:

This one seems to have people stumped. Here's another line.

It's a beautiful day. Forget about the Times... everyone else has. Come on. Stand up! So you're not a great actor. Who cares? You're much more than that.

It's quite a recent Oscar winning film.

OK, final clues before I post another one. It's a film about a Broadway play, starring a washed up actor who formerly played a superhero. The actor playing the actor also played a superhero previously in his career.

Paul, I think this might be Birdman? I watched this a few weeks ago on BBC iPlayer. My excuse for not recognising the dialogue ...I dozed off about halfway through the film. #-o   :fswink: It's still available, so I might watch it again.

Given the clues above, I think you are right Jill. I wouldn't bother re-watching it though, Mrs P and I got to the end of it and though "there's 2 hours on our lives we'll never get back".

Thank you Paul. This is my offering - some would call it a classic.

You can't fight her - no one ever got the better of her. Never, never. She was beaten in the end, but it wasn't a man, it wasn't a woman. It was the sea.

The film is based on a book and they both have the same one word title. The opening line of the book, which is the same as in the film, has been described as " One of the most instantly recognisable first lines in literature. "

It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me.

Paul, my copy of the book has yellowed with age and although I have re-read it many times over the years, the character of Mrs Danvers still gives me the creeps.

Now, back over to you. :)
