Great South Run

Post by Mike Channin »

Ran the Great South Run today. I am NOT a runner, and haven't run for about 2 years. At all. Understandably, my legs are a bit sore now. Got soaked as well - definitely the most miserable run I've ever done (in terms of conditions - squelchy shoes never much fun, especially with 9.5 miles still to go)

As predicted, my legs hurt today. A lot.

Am I right in thinking this is a half marathon Mike?
Well done anyway - I dont imagine it is easy running that sort of distance without any specific training.

Only 10 miles. (Only???)

Was easy from the fitness point of view, but painful from the 'legs don't know what's hit them' point of view.

Today I am in SOME pain. Can hardly walk, despite lots of painkillers. My legs are both swollen up by about an inch round the thighs (look like someone else's legs - weird!), I've probably shredded about 25% of the muscle fibres in them, and I'm quarter of a stone heavier with the amount of swelling. Ouch ouch ouch.

Serves me right for not training though. No pain, no gain, so this must be SERIOUSLY good for me, when I can walk again.

Was out at lunch time, and got overtaken by a little old lady...

Well, amazingly enough, I can STILL do the R word thing ok, even with my legs looking like an elephant's legs. Have obviously torn every single muscle fibre not used for the R word, and left the rest intact...

The words 'only' & '10miles' don't belong in the same sentence!

I'm well impressed!
48yo, weight... let's just say heavyweight & leave it at that.

Especially when that's 20 times further than I've run at all in the last 2 years.

Also forgot to mention I also suffered with a bad case of jogger's nipple (well both of them actually), which I just 'reminded' myself of while doing the R word tonight. Ouch ouch!

Found ourselves following a couple of 'fairies' dressed in pink tutu's running for Breast Cancer Research at one point. My friend suggested I should enter the London marathon and run in that outfit. Erk.

Apparently I came 8173rd. But I did get a nice medal, and also got to wander round Portsmouth in driving cold rain wearing a foil blanket...

Legs took 4 days to recover - were a bit sore yesterday (Thurs) but all fixed again now. Now I will have to go for another run before they forget how to cope again...
