Listen to this (please)

Post by webberg »

There are a lot of threads here about music in various forms and genres.

There is clearly a very knowledgeable bunch of FS with very varied tastes in music.

On the basis that nobody has a monopoly on the truth nor what is "great/good/bad" in music and that we all come across things that we think are worth sharing, here is a place to mention bands or albums or single tracks or performances that you think will be of interest elsewhere.

If possible include a link to a website or music streaming service so that we can access it easily and quickly. (Preferably a free one).

No particular rules about what can be suggested although some form of warning about strong lyrics might be useful?

And remember that one persons' view that hard style techno trance is something that excites and inspires, is another persons' audio version of strangling a cat, so no disparaging comment please.

If you try something and don't like it, express that personal opinion and move on.

Great idea Graham. This is the latest song that I posted lyrics from on the name the tune thread. (Taxi by Harry Chapin). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfqjKDRQvWI

It was a minor hit in the US and I don't know if it was even released as a single in the UK/Ireland. I just think he was a great story teller - shame he died so young.

Yes, very good idea Graham.

And I like your first pick, Paul. I didn't really know Harry Chapin before you posted this and have listened to a couple of his songs just now. What strikes me is the melancholy in his stories and music.

Which brings me to one of my favourite albums of all time: 'Bleeding' by Psychotic Waltz. This is an American band (from San Diego; 1990-1996) whose first two albums were sometimes described as 'hippie metal'. Those are good in their in own right, but the sound and feel of this fourth and last album was more melancholic. Interesting lyrics too. The band was more popular in Europe than in the US (but that's relative, it was very much an underground act). I have seen them perform live in my country.

Here are two songs from Bleeding: 'Faded' and 'Morbid'. Beware: the music is melodic but very heavy.

Hi Rodger

Not a band I'm familiar with, but I figure they would be a pretty good live band - lots of energy. Don't know why, but they made me think of Golden Earring and Radar Love.

My first contribution.

The first 50 seconds is not worth it (back stage footage).

I confess that this band is currently rocking my world and I may be a tiny bit obsessive about their latest album (White Lighter).

Liked the Harry Chapin.

Will try the suggestions from Rodger later.

On the radio this morning

Glenn Campbell sings Green Day

I know - it should be like a banana and ketchup sandwich but actually it works.

Hi Graham

I hadn't heard of Typhoon, but I liked their energy and the unusual combination of instruments. The lead singer also has a quite distinctive voice.

When you mentioned Glen Campbell and Green Day, Time of Your Life immediately sprang to mind before I clicked on the link and you're right, it does work. I'd love to hear Billie Joe have a go at Rhinestone Cowboy.

This is a long one, a whole album.

No real video either so something to play in the background.

I also confess to being a fan of this band.

This is electro swing.

Bit like 1920's swing and bee bop but with some dub step.

Like Glenn Campbell and Green Day, it should not work but it does.

Band is called The unlikely Candidates.

The track is Follow my Feet.

They are from Fort Austin in Texas and I predict big things from them.

This reminded us of Russell Brand singing African child! Are they really from Texas?

The video was very good.

Yes from Texas (but Fort Worth not Austin).

Not seen/heard Russell Brand singing anything. Can't say I find him or his brand of "humour" much to my taste either. I'll see if I can find the piece you mention and give him the benefit of my doubt.

Try this one as well.

I put One Toke Over The Line on the Name That Tune thread, or in this case "stump the band", and said I would post the song here.

As noted there, Brewer and Shipley, the song composers/performers, were named personally as subversive to American youth by Vice President of the United States, Spiro Agnew, but at the same time the song was performed on the Lawrence Welk show and called a gospel song.

Agnew, at least, understood the drug reference!

Here is the Brewer and Shipley version:

And the Lawrence Welk version:

Sorry Peter, not my cup of tea. But I get the joke about the tv show!

Graham, that electro swing is one of the best things I've heard in ages (and seen). Will be doing more of that! thanks

Elephant Revival. Last record is " these changing skies". Their lead singer Bonnie Paine is like a siren - if she knocked at the door and asked me to come with her - I would be like one of the kids in the "Pied Piper of Hamelin". (Rattenfänger von Hameln für die deutschsprachigen Free Spirits). Her voice is so .. Out of this world. I am not alone, there is published other victims out there: http://www.gratefulweb.com/articles/bon ... -boyfriend

One of the nicest songs is "Ring around the moon". Many links on YouTube and their website http://elephantrevival.com

Uh and don't get hooked...
