I was intrigued by this clue and decided to google The Thick of it. I’d never heard of this program, although I did know that the actor to whom you are referring played Dr Who at one stage. I see from Wikipedia that he is a second cousin once removed of the singer in question, who I had heard of, but I’ve no idea what he looks like, nor do I know any of his songs!

The Thick of It is magnificent. Think of it as a modern, sweary version of Yes Minister. It is one of my favourite comedy series. While I'm on the topic, I've been watching Schitts Creek lately on Netflix. Complete comedy genius - highly recommended.

As Peter gave the correct answer of Fontella Bass, perhaps he would like to put up the next song title?

If not then I'll leave it to someone else to step up to the line.
Sorry Jill. I do not know why I missed this. However, I am not too proud to accept this undeserved handout!

Last weekend, we listened to a radio program (or programme) on the composer of this next song. Confusing trivia provided on request.

I asked Jen and she answered “By the time I get to Phoenix” before I even finished the first line. So I guess the program was about Jimmy Webb?

Yes to both! =D>

If you knew the songwriter from the title without looking it up, maybe you should each get a turn?

His name just popped into my head when Jen named the song. I think he wrote a few songs that were hits for Glen Campbell and he also wrote MacArthur Park which was a hit for the Irish actor, Richard Harris.

Jen is out at the moment, but I’ll ask her if she was to put up a song when she gets home. If not, I’ll pick up the mantle.

OK, so Jennifer has told me to put this one up.

Our love is bound to continue

For the record, I haven’t a clue what song it is!

Anyway, Jennifer has told me the name of the song and I remember it, but mainly just the chorus. It was something that struck a chord with her in her teens.

Time for a clue. The song was by an English band that was successful in the UK and, to a lesser extent, the US during the 60s and early 70s.

One of the original members of the band left in 1968 to form a new group with two other musicians. He also took part in a novelty song that was a Christmas number 1 in the UK and this song included a reference to the song from which Jennifer’s lyrics are taken.

Could the band be “The Move”, or the trio that was formed “Cream”?

Good guess, but no.

A further clue. The trio became a quartet about a year after they were formed.

Another good guess, but no.

The band(s) that our friend joined weren’t very creative when it came to naming the band. Although group might be a more appropriate word than band.

Another good guess, but no. The original band that had the hit with the record from which the lyrics are taken was a lot better known than Bad Company. The band member who left went on to further success with his new colleagues. The original band are still performing as far as I know, although a number of the original members are no longer with them.

I’m surprised that nobody has guessed the band at this stage - either the original band or the new one that was formed/joined by the member who left. Naming the song might be a bit more difficult. Anyway, time for another clue.

The new band that was formed was named after the three members. When the fourth member joined, his name was added. They were all well known musicians in their own right and are regarded as one of the first ‘supergroups’.

I can only think of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - but they are a USA band

That’s them alright. Well done! But only two of them are from the USA. One of them was born in England but moved to the USA many years ago and took out US citizenship in his mid 30s. The other member is Canadian.

Interesting guess Paul. However, that song was recorded by Crosby, Stills and Nash (or, more precisely, by Stephen Stills with the other two as backing singers), whereas the song the lyrics came from was recorded by the band that Graham Nash was with before he became a member of CSN.

I figured the song might be difficult for people to remember, but I thought that people would remember the band, which was one of the most successful English bands of the 60s/early 70s.

Ok - then the Band may be the Hollies?

Yes, it was the Hollies.

The song in question was a top ten hit in the UK and reached number 40 in the US. Not a classic, but it struck a chord with Jennifer in her teenage years.

As mentioned earlier, it was referenced in a novelty song that was the Christmas number one that year. Final clue - the song that included a reference to the Hollies song that we are looking for was Lily the Pink.
