Was it K D Lang with the re-work version?

If it was Crying, and I suspect it was, it was Don McLean (confirmed by Paul’s clue)
But the title has already been guessed, so maybe not 🤔 (or maybe Paul just hasn’t seen Peters answer yet).

Paul, not sure why no one else wants to pursue that, but I just played Crying by Roy Orbison.

Also,

Wait a minute, that was just a little while ago, we we were married!
Crying is correct. And it was Don McLean who did the cover version in the early 80s. As Wolfie pointed out, there was a clue in my last post where I quoted the first two lines of American Pie.

Over to you, Peter.

Paul, I am upset I did not catch your quotes. Probably, I was distracted by the thought that I was old. I do, of course, remember when dirt was young!

Back to business; I looked at several songs and found that they did not chart in the UK. this one did, however.

"You make me sing like a guitar hummin'"

Mr. Plumb is correct! =D>

Well, actually is it "Cracklin' Rosie", but close enough.

Not sure if that helps with ear worms.

I knew that one straight away. Just as well I didn’t look at this thread yesterday as I think it’s better to give someone else a chance to put up a song!

I’m a bit confused though by your reference to when dirt was young. :?

Back to the 70's -

She said, I've had it comin' to me
But I wanted it that way

Paul, is the saying "older than dirt" not used in Ireland?

Well, I am older.

This next one seems to have sufficient trans-oceanic credentials.

"Couldn't hear the robin sing"

Older than dirt or older than me?

That new one sounds familiar, but I can’t quite place it. Maybe it’ll come to me in a dream.

No, Paul, not a Beatles' tune.

No sneaking involved, Jill; I was just sleeping when you posted!

I meant that as I was already up, dressed and ready to go shopping, I was sneaking in with the answer before Mr Paul V had woken up from his dreams. I don’t think he’s normally an early riser. :fswink: Perhaps a case then of ‘ the early bird catches the worm ‘.

‘ As old as dirt ‘ is a new one on me too - I shall squirrel it away and use at the first available opportunity.

It is now 10pm UK time and as I am by nature a lark and not an owl, sleep beckons.

Gerry Rafferty did Night Owl, but that was an album.
Can't think of a song with 'early bird catches the worm' in it. Unless The Tweets had a second single I don't know about (thankfully) :D

Steve, no there isn’t  although I have been known to dream about a song.

Twenty years ago, I had to stay with my dear, lovely ( but now late ) mum for eight weeks, after she had had a fall and broken her right arm.

Unfortunately, she only listened to Radio 2 and as I didn’t even possess such a thing as a walkman then, I was subjected to some ‘ not my type music ‘.😬

Hence, it wasn’t long before, deprived of hearing rock music, I would occasionally dream of hearing the opening lyrics of Metallica’s Fuel, over and over again. It was weird.

Apparently, the Birdie Song was voted the most hated song of all times.👎 How dare you suggest that I would have any knowledge of a follow up single. [-X

Back to far more important matters - there is a connection between the following and Peter’s previous choice.

But my love is there for you anytime of the day

Thank you Steve, although some might question my musical taste as ... questionable.

Obviously more clues are needed, so first verse:

What I feel I can't say
But my love for you is there anytime of day
But if it's not love that you need
Then I'll try my best to make everything succeed

Originally, this singer was part of a famous English group and when he went solo, this song, along with Bob Dylan’s If Not For You, featured on his 1970 triple album, All Things Must Pass. Perhaps someone will now know the answer ... or not? :fswink:

OK.

So it's George Harrison and the lyrics sound vaguely familiar, but I can't for the life of me name the song.

Paul, correct about George Harrison, although I don't think this one is going to fly.

It's What is life

I won't put another one up, so will hand the baton over to you again.
