Thank you Plummy.

Something from the early 1980’s.

Lays me down, with my mind she runs
Throughout the night, no need to fight

A small clue - this group hail from my part of the world, Guildford.

On a roll here Plummy - I wasn't at all confident that anyone would recognise the lyrics, hence the clue.

Once again, over to you. :)

Didn't need the clue, got it with "with my mind she runs"

Laying back, head on the grass
chewing gum having some laughs

Hm. Thought it might last a bit longer that one :-)
Great band live Heart, a good rock band. Although they only had power ballad 'hits' really.

I have the record on vinyl so maybe I had an advantage.

First clues - solo artist, very late 70's from a musical

Wild guess -- Liza Minnelli, Cabaret? (I don't know anything about the film and haven't seen it... or the song for that matter. )

Without the clue I would have said "There's No Business Like Show Business", but now I am less sure.

Neither are correct - sorry fellas. Next clue - the artist is British (but had early success in the USA (Grammy nominated for one song)). His (next clue) career started in the early 70's and he's still going!

My first thought was Paul Nicholas, but it's more likely to be David Essex ...

Could the song be from Evita?

Don't think so Jill, wasn't Evita a bit later?
Can't think of another musical he was in though, unless he was in Chess? But even that's not 70s I don't think.

I don’t know Steve, it was a not very well educated guess.

I have only seen two musicals, Hair and Oh Calcutta.

He did sing "Don't Cry for me Argentina" in Evita, which sort of fits the lyric Dave has posted (I can think of "of what a circus, oh what a show ...")?
I love these clue ones

Well, I have to give the plaudits to Wolfie as even though it wasn't a formal guess/stab in the dark, he has written the correct answer with "Oh What a Circus" -1979 according to the interweb!

ha ha, well I never :D

A massive song, but maybe not so well known verse...
"Oh, my child
You'll never know
Just what you mean to me"
