Re: Name that tune
Sounds like country music to me. I can’t imagine Bill Withers singing a song with that line in it.

Yes, it does and I agree about Bill Withers, although a man would probably sing a line like that.Paul Victory wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 2:26 pm Sounds like country music to me. I can’t imagine Bill Withers singing a song with that line in it.
I can't think of any songs by Kenny Rogers but who is the male C and W singer with the beautiful long hair, which he usually wears in a plait. Willy someone? Not sure if he is dead though.

Re: Name that tune
Willie Nelson is still alive. John Prine died 3 days ago. He visited Ireland quite often, so his death made the news here.
If you think about it, that’s a classic country and western line. It’s got a mom, prison and drunkenness all in one line.

You're really on to something here, Paul...Paul Victory wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 8:51 pm Willie Nelson is still alive. John Prine died 3 days ago. He visited Ireland quite often, so his death made the news here.

From the David Allen Coe version of the song:
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song
Because he hadn't said anything at all about mama
Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunk
Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me
And after reading it I realized that my friend had written the perfect country & western song
And I felt obliged to include it on this album
The last verse goes like this here

Re: Name that tune
Thanks Ron. As I'm not going to try to guess the title of the song, I looked it up on YouTube just now. I found a recording of a radio interview given by John Prine in which he told the story behind the song - how it came into being and how he refused to take a writing credit and got a jukebox instead. In the interview, he said that the song would not have become a hit without the last verse that Steve Goodman added a few years after the song was written.
Quite a funny story.

Re: Name that tune
I won't drag this one out - you either know it or you don't.
The song is "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" written by the late John Prine, but with the most recognizable version sung by David Allen Coe. (In the former days) Here in the states, if that song fires up in a bar or crowded restaurant, you can bet that nearly everyone will be singing it before it's over... Here's a link if interested:

Re: Name that tune
You are correct on a couple of points, MrS - the song title and singer, so it's your go! I was surprised it hadn't been used on this forum previously (or so says the Search function).
I was first introduced to Lean On Me via the Club Nouveau version, and it was many years before I discovered it was a remake. Like many times before, it just another sign of my uncouthness...
Regarding the bars comment - I've no idea. I don't go to many bars these days, and when I do, they certainly aren't C&W themed. I should have said "Country & Western" bars in my previous post as I have witnessed it myself. I mentioned restaurants only because there was a Texas-themed steakhouse in these parts years ago that would play this song every hour or so. The entire staff would get in on the act thus prompting the patronage to sing along as well. My kids loved it. Well, that and the fact that they encouraged you to throw your empty peanut shells on the floor - LoL!

Re: Name that tune
Ron, we do not usually go out to bars either. We usually drink alone, but that is a different song!
I was thinking of using a Willie Nelson song, but could not find one that I knew more than the title lyrics.
So, as not to take up too much time, here is a one-word (sort of) clue:
"B-b-b-baby"

Re: Name that tune
There's a great track on the Thin Lizzy 'Live and Dangerous' album with that line. But it's more of an improvise than lyric. Such a good track that the title escapes me might be "Rosalie"

Re: Name that tune
I looked, and there is a track "Rosalie/Cowgirl's song" on that album.
But, that is not my tune, and it does not seem to have words in common.
For example, my song has "she looked at me with big brown eyes".
