I had to look it up, Paul -- turns out I never would have gotten it. That's one of those songs I recognize because I've heard it so much on the radio. Don't have any of the band's albums in my collection. (Ought to remedy that, oughtn't I?)

I'm sure somebody else will recognize it, though.

One of the best American bands not to really make it big on this side of the pond. The song I took the extract from is from their debut album, which was one of the first albums I bought. It;s probably best known in Ireland as the theme song from a TV program that looks back over archive TV footage.

The two main protagonists have recently started touring again. Come on Strider, I bet you know who they are. :P

I figured you'd probably know it. I wish I could say the same for your choice. Sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place it. Maybe it'll come back to me.

Paul and Zoot-its from an older " Country " album but not in the conventional music sense more the rustic sense and a step change from what this world famous singer/songwriter had done before or since come to that.

Still couldn't figure it out, so I caved and googled it. Listened to it on YouTube. Very unlike his usual stuff. Never saw the movie, so that route to recognition did not apply.

On a separate note, who are Navigation Hazard?

OK so the answer was Amoreena from the brilliant Country Comfort album by Elton John

Navigation Hazard is the nom de plume of Jonathan Bone, the great and massive indoor rower who rows for Team Oarsome and won BIRC in 2010-he has a very eclectic taste-check out his blog on the C2 forum-its worth it-he had a "tube" outtake for Steely Dan last year I think.

OK I guess its still me -how about .....

Over to you guys

You clearly have a far more encyclopaedic knowledge of 60s and 70s songs than I have. i don't think I've recognised one of your songs yet, while you have nailed nearly every song I've posted. Maybe zoot knows this one, but if not, my challenge to you is to pick a song that's moderately obscure but that I actually know!

This is just a suggestion (and feel free to ignore it) - but - there appears to only be about three people playing on this thread and I think it's because the lyrics are (mostly) from more obscure records that most will never have heard of, let alone actually know the lyrics. As Googling isn't allowed then it kind of eliminates much chance of any others joining in.
Could I suggest that we stick to popular chart type music (sorry Webberg) so everyone can have a chance of joining in (as I say, just my tuppence worth - or it could be I know very little music!)

Great suggestion plummy. while we're waiting for Alan to return from his weekend exile, I'll throw in a classic from the 70s that's another of my karaoke favourites:

Looks like I'm on a solo run here. It's not my fault I can't row and have nothing better to do with my time. :-({|=

I figure my last one is either too obvious, too old or people are just getting bored with the thread. :?

I'm not bored with the thread... I just don't listen to much commercial music, so it's pretty rare that I'll know any of the answers.

I recognized the lyrics... I can even hum the tune... but I couldn't have named either the band or the song without looking it up.

I don't know the lyrics - or at least don't recognise them as they stand. Maybe a couple more lines?

The problem with this particular song is that the title of the song is repeated over and over again at the start of nearly every line. However, there are a couple of other lines that don't feature the song title:

Don't walk away, hey. OK. If that's the way it must be OK.
I guess I'll go on home it's late, maybe tomorrow night but wait, what do I see?

That's correct Alan.

Another one of my early album purchases.

How about this one:
