Heading in the right direction - right album, wrong track - might be time to upscale to a triple espresso?? :D :D

As it's on the radio I'm listening to right now, let's try this one:

Don't speculate
You thought you had me covered, now boy
I've got your bait
But you're bound to be my lover... ohhh

Thank you Plummy.

I am reasonably familiar with several of Aretha Franklin's songs and luckily, this was one of them.

I'm not sure if my offering will be reasonably familiar to any one else ... We shall see.

This girl could put him right

A good suggestion Paul but not the right answer. This solo singer is a woman.

More lyrics.

If your child ain't all he should be now
This girl could put him right
I'll show him what he could be now
Just give me one night

American female and according to Wikipee, one of the best selling recording artists.

Anyone not liking this song, might call it a load of tommyrot.

It doesn't look as if this one is going anywhere - it was Acid Queen. ( Tina Turner from Tommy )

I'll let somebody else put up the next one.

My father took me into the city
To see a marching band"

Having seen the movie of that title on more than one occasion, could you possibly be referring to "Over There" by George M Cohan?

Just realised I was replying to the wrong post! #-o Paul, is the song you are quoting from "Billy Don't Be A Hero"?

No - more recent than that, and a bit darker(slight clue in there) :)

You may need to brush up on your EMO credentials :D :D - this song is something of an EMO anthem.

"When I was a young boy
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band

He said, "Son, when you grow up
Would you be the savior of the broken
The beaten and the damned?"

From the noughties, so fairly recent by this thread's standard

I've got the song running around in my head Paul, I do know it. Can't quite place the title. Is it Green Day?

No - it is an American band however - this track was a big hit both sides of the Atlantic in 2006 - the band is probably better known by it's initials(to fans at least :) )
