That's not what I want. I just wanted to show off and indicate that I knew the song, not to choose another song that no one's heard of!

OK, I surrender.
I will think of another song, but will wait for Paul V.'s go ahead.

Re: Name that tune
Yes, please go ahead Peter. I know it was a bit cheeky of me putting up another song by the same artists. The only other one of their songs that I know is Daydream, so it's probably better not to choose that one!

This one was on the charts in the US, UK, and Canada, albeit a while ago.

Hi Peter
Are you sure it charted in the UK? It doesn't ring even the tiniest of bells.

Re: Name that tune
Paul, according to Wikipedia:
For the original version,
Weekly charts (1974) Peak position
Australia 10
Canada RPM Top Singles 2
Canada RPM Adult Contemporary 1
UK 21
US Billboard Hot 100 6
US Billboard Adult Contemporary 7
US Cash Box Top 100 5
A version of this song was recorded by the group Brand New Heavies. This version reached #13 in the UK in August 1994.
Never having heard of the Brand New Heavies, I do not know if this is a big clue or not, so I will also add more lyrics'
"Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon
And kick up a little dust"

Re: Name that tune
Thanks Peter
I definitely don’t know the song. If it only made it to number 21 in the charts, it’s unlikely I would remember a song from over 40 years ago unless I knew it from some other connection - a film or TV series, an artist I particularly liked, etc.

Re: Name that tune
OK Paul, up the ante! Now I have to consider how high on the charts the song was, in addition to where else it was used. (I am not touching the "how long ago" comment; all my songs are old. )
In the hope that someone may be helped by one more line, appearing after the title at both beginning and end of the song.

Re: Name that tune
No need to up the ante. I’m just saying that there’s very little chance that I will recognise a song that was only a minor hit on this side of the Atlantic unless I happen to be a fan of the artist or I know it from a film, TV show or commercial, or perhaps from hearing it sung at karaoke.Peter_S wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 8:42 pm OK Paul, up the ante! Others with more in depth musical knowledge, or perhaps better memories, will no doubt do a lot better than me at recognising such songs.
As to the song being old, I’m far more likely to recognise a song from the 60s or 70s than those of a more recent vintage!

Re: Name that tune
Paul, I certainly was not being critical of you or your response. I was just trying to be funny, since instead of many of my songs, I actually looked to see if it had been on the charts in the UK! The previous few did not make it across the pond. Maybe if Ron comes to my aid, or I give the title tomorrow, you will go , since you do know the song, but probably have not sung it at karaoke.

Re: Name that tune
Don't worry about anything Peter, its all a bit of fun.
I'm sure us regulars here will know the song once it's revealed.
I like the 'Brand New Heavies'. Didn't they do a version of "Midnight at the Oasis" ?
Fits the camel and sand dune lines you've given, but I'd have put good money on it being a bigger hit than #14 in the UK in the 70s.

Re: Name that tune
I listened to the song just now - both versions - and I have to admit that I had heard it before, but I just wasn’t that familiar with the lyrics. I think I prefer the original version by Maria Muldaur, which is the one that sounded familiar to me.
Anyway, I’m sure Peter will confirm that you’re correct before too long, or you could just go ahead and post a new set of lyrics as you are definitely correct.

Wolfie, I used the info from Wikipedia, realizing that the people who contribute to the articles may not always be correct.
But, Paul is correct that it is your turn.

Re: Name that tune
I'd have lost my money then
I also don't even recall the original artist at all
Still, we got there thanks to the clues
My turn ... (A new one. Having just thought of one, I did a search to see if it had been used before and it turns out it was posted in 2018, by me )

I feel like I should know it, but it’s just not clicking. Maybe another line would help?

Re: Name that tune
Yes, well. I think another line might give it away. So I was deliberately difficult with the first line.
Not sure why, but I feel Plummy would know this one well.
"His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin' "
Big hit both sides of the Atlantic, but by different artists.

Re: Name that tune
Thanks Wolfie
I hadn't realised that a different group recorded the song in the US. So I googled it out of curiosity and when I saw the name of the band, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, what came to mind (for some strange reason) was something along the lines of the Charlie Daniels Band. I was amazed to see that the band consisted of seven David Cassidy lookalikes!
Anyway, time to put up another set of lyrics. It's becoming increasingly more difficult to come up with a song I know that hasn't been asked before, but I've searched the thread and this is the first time for this particular song (and artist(s) for that matter). Another oldie.
And her life's a mystery

Re: Name that tune
I thought this song would be recognised straight away. Another clue: it charted in the early 1970s and is featured in the closing scenes of an early 2000s comedy film.
