The song is by a singer songwriter who had a few hits on both sides of the Atlantic in the early 1970s. Two of his songs have already featured in this thread.

I don't like to leave these things to fester for too long, so here's another clue. Irish singer-songwriter who took his name from two English operetta composers.

Would I be right in thinking that would be Gilbert O'Sullivan?

You would indeed! Now you just need to name the song.

After your helpful clue, naming the singer was the easy bit ... The only song I can think of ( and then I'm not so sure ) is Alone Again or failing that, is the song about a baby or a young child?

Alone Again (Naturally) was asked previously on this thread as was Get Down.

This song is about Gilbert's young niece and the name of the song is her name.

Final clue. The subject of the song shares her name with an Irish county (albeit with a different spelling).

Well done Jill! Although it’s the slightly unusual spelling of Clair in the case of this particular song.

Your turn!

Smooth operator by Sadé is probably a bit too obvious?

No Paul, not Smooth Operator

More lyrics:

She knows music
I know music do you see
She's got the power, got the power ...

This is a song by Bob Seger - one word title, woman's name. The cover version that I have is by a singer ( who was one of your fellow countrymen ) and his band.

Another great musician who died too young. Far more revered by the Irish public than Mr Hewson.

Paul Hewson's daughter, Eve, was interviewed recently about her leading role in the BBC's new drama, The Luminaries. I only skimmed the article, but she did admit to having doors opened for her, because of having a famous father. Now, there's a thing.

Apparently ( although I haven't watched the series ) her performance has been receiving good write ups.

Thin Lizzy were brilliant live, mostly because of front man Phil.
My first proper rock gig really, so good we checked if there were any spare tickets for the next night and went again!
Rosalie was a highlight.
I'll get my thinking cap on for the next song ...

PS. The Luminaries is quite good. A bit baffling at times, but very watchable.

Nice to hear she's doing well. I haven't heard of the series and I didn't even know that Bono had a daughter who acts.

There's lot of ambivalence about Bono in Ireland. I think it's partly because of his gigantic ego and partly because of his preachy attitude. There's a (somewhat apocryphal) story told about him that to some extent sums this up.

Apparently, during a U2 concert in Dublin, he started snapping his fingers rhythmically every two seconds and said to the audience "do you realise that every time I do this, a child in Africa dies of hunger". Someone in the audience is reputed to have shouted "then stop doing it, you murdering b*stard".

I know it's by no means a laughing matter, but the story illustrates perfectly the ambivalence that is felt towards Bono in Ireland. We admire what he's achieved commercially and what he has done to help combat world hunger, but we also find him just a little bit too self important.

Thank you Paul - I didn’t know that Bonio had an actress daughter either.

I have also heard the finger snapping story but have no idea as to whether it’s true or not.

I can enjoy an artist’s acting/singing etc but for several reasons, not necessarily approve of them.

As a fully fledged Grumpy Old Woman, I find the cult of celebrity, shallow and meaningless. :x I do not worship at the shrine.

I think some further lyrics or a clue might be needed. Or we could just ask Peter to put us out of our misery as he seems to know the song?
