Paul, several songs are battling it out in my head; there must a lot of extra space in there. #-o

The one that is winning is "All By Myself", by Gilbert O'Sullivan, it think.

The line you're thinking of is "Those days are gone", which is indeed from All By Myself, which I think was originally recorded by Eric Carmen. As far as I know, Gilbert O'Sullivan never recorded it, but he did record a song called Alone Again Naturally.

Correct! You've opened up the door to a new song choice.

The drink will flow and blood will spill and if the boys want to fight you better let 'em.

The Boys Are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy.

A neighbour of ours died a few years ago and we discovered at her funeral that a number of years previously, she was the proprietor of Dino's Bar and Grill in Rathmines, which was frequented by a young Phil Lynott.

I love that line, but I guess it's pretty obscure unless you really know the song. Hopefully these lines are a bit more recognisable.

Remember how we listened to the radio
And I said, "That's the place to be"?
And how I got the job as an FM jock the day you married me?

I'm thinking Harry Chapin and "W.O.L.D." but that might be off the mark as I haven't googled to check spellings etc

That was my first thought too, but I think that is too dark, and not sung to a woman.

That is correct! Your turn.

And Plummy, I've no idea why you think that song is not sung to a woman. It's a DJ calling his ex wife to see if they can get back together.

My mistake.

I listened again just now, and there is the dark part I remember with all the mistakes he made and the sad "successes". He called his wife, but does not have much hope of getting back together, 8 years later. Just my take.

Actually, I think he's calling her hoping that she will take him back. But she tells him she's found someone else and he finishes off by saying "OK, honey I see. I guess he's better than me. Sure old girl, I understand. You don't have to worry, I'm such a happy man... W.O.L.D. ......"

Sad song with an insight into how relationships can go wrong. Great storyteller who died far too young.

I like your thinking Jill, but the word angel does not appear in the song title.
