Paul, I am not sure the Fox Sports reference will help much, but then I am not a NASCAR fan. Also, no hijacking involved.
To keep things moving, and at the risk of too much info, here are more lines:
This town is spinning every Friday night
They dance the greatest and they do it right
Well, here's the latest, it's a crazy sight to see

Re: Name that tune
Well, based on Paul's clues I figured it out, but I don't think I should get the win.
I looked up the Wikipedia article about music in 1961 and scrolled through the "Top Hits on Record" looking for a band I had not heard of with a song title that sounded like it might contain the lyrics. The first song I listened to on Youtube was the correct one.
I had never heard of the band, but I recognised the melody. Never listened to the words before, though.
I think I broke Paul's one rule:

Gee, I thought you kids were sharp as a pistol!
It's got that groovy beat
That makes you stomp your feet
Come along and try
Gonna feel fine
And once you dance with me
You'll fall in love you see

Come along and try
Gonna feel fine
And once you dance with me
You'll fall in love you see

Re: Name that tune
I guess I stumped the band, again.
Most of the usual suspects have already posted, and rather than wait and hope Jan or Richard know the song, I will tell you it is the Bristol Stomp
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POwJNsb7g64
I will try another song, and since many of the recent guesses came from earlier decades, let's try:
And the angels ask me to recall
The thrill of it all
(A few sources give the lyrics as "the thrill of them all"; not as I remember, but provided in the interest of full disclosure)

Frank Ifield recorded it in 1962, 20 years after Dorothy Lamour first sang it.
Your turn Jill, but I take no responsibility for your age.

I don't want to take responsibility for my age anymore, either.
Here is my offering:
Well I feel so good, everything's getting high
You better take it easy 'cause the place is on fire
Correct title please. Any attempts at blaming the vagaries of technology, will be discounted.Peter_S wrote:Not me, it's that damn autocorrect.

Dang, I thought this one would be a slam-dunk. Here's some more info and some lyrics from a different part of the tune:Draggon wrote:I don't think this one's been tried here before, so have at it...
Here comes the big boss; let's get it on
It's a one-hit-wonder semi-novelty disco song from 1974. It reached #1 in many countries including US, UK, Australia, Germany, etc...
Additional lyrics:
There were funky China men;
From funky Chinatown.

Re: Name that tune
Thank you Ron - a lucky guess on my part.
Thank you also for the link - it might possibly have been a recording from a very popular BBC1 TV programme, called Top of The Pops???
Looking back, for me, the seventies will always be the decade of the most dated fashions and hairstyles. My son still finds our wedding photograph highly amusing and always says, “ Look at dad’s hair and sideburns. “
This is taken from a song that I think will never date - see how you go.
Baby, your mind done gone
Well, your mind done gone

This is an old standard - my favourite, recorded by a group from Northern Ireland. Their lead singer went solo and was knighted in 2016.

If he was knighted in 2016, it has to be Van Morrison.

The group was Them and of course their lead singer was Van Morrison. BPDG is the A side of a 45rpm that I have stashed away in the attic somewhere - Gloria was the B side.Jill wrote: This is an old standard - my favourite, recorded by a group from Northern Ireland.
