Not sure if I should write this, but I was diagnosed with PSC (primary sclerosing cholangitis) today. This is a disease of the bile ducts and liver, that is fairly common with IBD patients (which I have as well). As with IBD, causes are not known, the most likely theory right now is that it is an autoimmune disease. Ramifications are unclear too, besides having to undergo several very unpleasant medical examinations every year, higher risks of bile duct and bowel cancer and perhaps the need for a liver transplant, sometime in the future.
In short, not my best day today and I may go a bit quiet in the near future, but I'll be back!

I'm really sorry to hear that Roger. It puts problems with sore elbows into perspective, that's for sure.
I hope that you (and your doctors) are able to slow down the progression of the disease and that, if and when you need a liver transplant, everything goes at it should.

Thank you all for your comments, I appreciate it.
Barbara, you always know to say nice things about people, that's a great quality (I should practice that more often myself).
My last remark about going a bit quiet perhaps made it all look more dramatic than necessary. For now, apart from having to take some pills, not much has changed: the doctors are going to check me for tumors next month, and I really don't expect to get bad news then, especially this early after the diagnosis. This disease can develop very slowly, and even then there is no rule that says I will ever get those bad things associated with it. The 'good thing' is, that these regular check-ups, however unpleasant, mean the white coats can get on top of things quickly if needed.
So you can expect me to be the usual stickler here.
And I promise I won't turn this thread into my medical bulletin board.

Sorry to hear the news Rodger. I admire the positive note you struck about the doctors being able to get on top of things quickly as they will be examining you more often. Take it easy!
