A life defined in music

Post by webberg »

Stealing barefaced from Steve Lamacq on 6Music, he runs a feature which asks people to list the following:

First record ever bought - be honest
First gig attended
Best gig attended
Good day tune
Bad day tune

Fancy a try?

For me

Dave Edmunds - I hear you knocking
T Rex at Bristol Hippodrome November 1969
Tricky one for best gig. Either Green Day at wembley two years ago or Biffy Clyro this year
Varies almost weekly but currently probably Jake Bugg and Lightening Bolt
Again variies a lot but presently The Airborne Toxic Event and Somtime around Midnight.

Over to you
Uphill to the finish

First record ever bought
Er... bought with my own money or talked my mom into buying for me?

With my own money would have been some easy listening pop single from the early 70s.
Something by the Carpenters  or Tony Orlando and Dawn  .

First single I talked my mom into buying for me was when I was 6:
"The 1432 Franklin Pike Circle Hero" - Bobby Russell...

which I thought was a song about my daddy. I can still sing it for you if you like.

First gig attended
I got dragged along to a Beatlemania concert with my older brothers. We sat near the front. All I remember was sitting for the entire show with my eyes closed and my fingers in my ears hoping it would end soon. It was LOUD!

Best gig attended
Darryl Purpose - American singer/songwriter.
No matter how good a concert is, it always seems better when the musicians are personal friends!

Good day tune
Almost impossible to pick, there are so many. How about:
"Lookin' Out My Back Door" - Creedence Clearwater Revival?

Bad day tune
As in I've had a bad day and I want to feel better?
"Side by Side" - Lee Morse (1927)
"B-Side of Life" - Timbuk 3

Or I've had a bad day and I want to wallow in misery?
"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" - John McDermott

Can I add a category?

Well-Liked Song in a Language You Don't Understand
(or am I the only one who listens to music like this?)

Las Marias - Tish Hinojosa (Mexican)
Katkera kaipaus - Myllärit (Karelian)

First Record: School's Out - Alice Cooper
First Gig: Curved Air (Fairfield Halls Croydon 1975)
Best Gig: Tricky! No not the band. Rory Gallagher Hammersmith Odeon 1976 ?. Metallica , Nottingham 2009? Black Sabbath Download 2012 ?
Thin Lizzy, Hammersmith Odeon 1976 (yes the gigs that became Live and Dangerous)
Good Day: Map of the Problematique - Muse or Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Bad Day: Anything very heavy or thrashy - pretty wide range

Hmm Graham - dont get Biffy - seen them twice in recent years suporting Muse and Metallica and just did not connect

This is one of those that could have a different answer for each question every day of the week. Well, maybe not the first one :-)
today for me ...
First record ever bought - be honest. Got my mum to buy - Devil Gate Drive, Suzie Quatro. With my own money - Things we do for Love - 10cc
First gig attended - Paul Mcartney & Wings, Birmingham Odeon 1979.
Best gig attended - definitley the hardest one. In fact impossible! Can I have 5, or 10? The latest attended is George Michael last night, on his orchestral tour. Have to say I was very pleasently surprised. The sound (for the NEC arena) was excellent. The orchestra superb, and George himself a consumate artist.
Good day tune - Got my Mojo Working - Jimmy Smith.
Bad day tune - Achillies Last Stand - Led Zep.

Good day tune Don't Stop me Now - Queen, We are the Champions - Queen - Bat out of Hell - Meat Loaf

I also had Two Little Boys, which I had conveniently forgotten about  , but as a gift I don't count it as first bought

That would be one of my best gigs also! It was so good we bought another ticket for the very next night!
