Predict The Euros
http://www.predicttheeuros.com/
For those of you who enjoy predicting football scores, here is a little something to hopefully make the upcoming Euro Championships a bit more interesting (let's face it, any tournament that opens with Poland-Greece will be otherwise lacking in this department). I've been taking part on this site since 2006 (they also run this for World Cups) and it's always good fun. What makes this a little different are the bonus points for correctly predicting 'less fancied' outcomes or scores. So be sure to read the rules regarding how points are won.
I've created a Free Spirits mini-league so we can compete against one another. Just enter the unique join code 85223 when registering.
For the record, I'm competing under the username "Steve Nicol's Glaring Miss

After the first round of matches, I find myself sitting at the bottom of the table, propping everyone else up. Jason, meanwhile, has built up a small lead at the top. Will it remain after the next round of matches? Will England try to win a game?

Re: Predict The Euros
After getting both scores right today (I know, total skill, not the slightest element of luck ), I decided an update is called for. It might be the only time I top the table, so I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Re: Predict The Euros
The group stages are now complete, so let's have a look at the current standings:
1 - paulv66 - 24
2 - Hewitt - 20
3 - Steve Nicol's Glaring Miss - 20
4 - bluemunich - 18
5 - webberg - 16
6 - stan63 - 15
7 - strider - 10
Paul is still sitting at the top, and has a healthy 4 point lead. Only seven games to go, so it'll take some amazing predictions (or immense good fortune) to catch him.

Re: Predict The Euros
I seem to be good at predicting scores, not so good at getting the overall result right. I've only got 10 correct results out of 24, but 7 of those were correct scores. Weird!

Re: Predict The Euros
Very easy for me to trot out my little prediction now that we have lost.Scoop wrote:I've already predicted it Alan.
England will lose.
But in all honesty is anyone surprised? We played well for 20 minutes and then waited for penalties. Newspapers have treated us to the usual headlines like "Long to Wayne over us" and the theory that our win against Ukraine was thanks to Rooney's hair transplant. Now Rooney is off to his tropical paradise and I'm off to clean my wheelie bins. Thanks a lot.
On Friday the Sun crowed that Rooney was 'Ready to do something very special for England."
In your own time Wayne.

...and that's the bit that really grates. I gave up on football after the last world cup for reasons your have summed up very nicely here. Now I'm watching while money gradually erodes Rugby Union.Scoop wrote: Now Rooney is off to his tropical paradise and I'm off to clean my wheelie bins. Thanks a lot.

Re: Predict The Euros
The result for England is pretty much reflective of their postion in Europe, perhaps one of the best 8 teams there.
Compare us to Germany and the areas in which we have to improve are obvious. Our midfield and forwards have be to more interchangeable and we need to see some intelligent movement rather than just jogging up and down the pitch for the sake of it.
We lack a creative midfield player. Parker is a destroyer. Ox and Walcott are quick but in straight lines. Young was a disappointment and added no value.
The better teams in this tournament understand that we play a rigid system and they put players into the gaps between the "two banks of 4" and we just can't deal with that. Do we try that? No.
We have a long way to go to become a top 10 world team in my view.
A comprehensive review is required of tactics and squads.
We shoudl also consider whether the managers job is ideal for a 65 year old when a lot of teams have much younger coaches and I suggest a more modern approach.

Re: Predict The Euros
Is it money that's causing the problem, or crazy rule changes that are becoming more and more complex so that referees don't know how to interpret them and it's a complete lottery as to how any particular game will be referreed?JonathanA wrote:I gave up on football after the last world cup for reasons your have summed up very nicely here. One game remains, and five of the seven participants have a mathematical chance of winning. Paul remains in the lead, although Italy's win last night has moved myself up into second, just one point behind.

I had a look at the table Alan. You were SO close to going 3 points clear. I bet you were fuming when Germany got that late penalty.
