Christmas Film competition

Post by webberg »

In a rash moment, our family of 5 has decided that on Boxing Day this year rather than try to find a show or event or other entertainment (it's my wife's birthday), we would all instead pick a feature film and watch them back to back over the day.

The pressure is now on to find somthing that is entertaining, able to be watched by everybody (youngest is 11) and perhaps has a mildly Christmas theme.

Open to suggestions please

a couple of Christmas classics that our TV executives never fail to show and I always find time to watch, (but would never usually admit to) are Home Alone and Oliver Twist. A tin of chocolates and a cold beer or 2, most relaxing.

It's a Wonderful Life. Corny as hell, but a great Christmas movie and suitable for all the family.

The Polar Express.

As a Christmas movie it is unbeatable.

My son and I both very much enjoyed Jingle All the Way - the Arnie Shwarzenegger (sp) Christmas film. We were talking about it only the other day, and still rate it as fun (even though the ending is a tad cheesey).

Thanks Pete.

National Lampoons is on the banned list I'm afraid. My wife can't stand it.

I feel the same way about Elf.

I am thinking about going completely off piste with blade Runner though

Getting away from what will undoubtedly be a fest of all the old favourites and not so favourites on TV how about the following Graham ?

Gran Torino (for the men)
Bridges of Madison County (for the ladies)
Mrs Doubtfire (for everyone-always makes me laugh)
Once upon a time in the West-classic western for all
Fargo - for the snow

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/
Very entertaining action film, a genre I never seem to like as much as others.

The Bucket List (2007)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0825232/
Great feel good film for all the family

Hanna (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0993842/
young girl - assassin film, all good fun.

Midnight Run (1988)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095631/
De Niro and Grodin at their best. Another good family film although with a bit more swearing.

Fargo (1996)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116282/
Brilliantly funny film

although a lot of my suggestions aren't suitable for kids or Christmassy themed so ignore what I've said.

Don't know yet. The only person who knows all is my wife and she's not saying.

I suspect that my youngest is probably going for Kung Fu Panda #2.

My daughter may choose Paul

My eldest probably some obscure "art house" film. he and his best friend are massively into film (they made their own last summer) and have been putting massive effort into this project. In fact his friend wants to join in!

My wife may get something like Johnny English.

Exciting or what!!

We sat down to watch "Home Alone" as a family the other day (ages 43 to 5). We were so appalled by the way the family at the start behaved towards each other we turned it off after 5 minutes.
I know you've chosen, but I am intrigued by the "Disney Christmas Carol". I caught a little of it last night and it looked pretty good.

I quite enjoyed that too. Also liked Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction.

Was won by my wife's choice of "Senna".

Very good film and I'd recommend it.

Followed by Kung Fu Panda 2 (youngest)
Followed by Paul (daughter)
Followed in "joint last" by my choice of Nativity and my eldest boys with The Breakfast Club.

Off to sulk now.

Watched Senna last night - very good (if you've ever followed Formula 1), Kung Fu Panda 2 is a very worthy sequel and Paul will be viewed today or tomorrow at the latest.

As for Nativity and Breakfast Club - not for me. Tell your good lady/youngest and daughter that they have excellent taste
