Musical chain

Post by webberg »

Following an exchange on music with Mr Gooner, I'm reminded that Radcliffe and Maconie (radio DJ's) have been running for some months/years a listener based feature.

Basically a track is suggested by a listener (and played) which could be anything.

The next listener has to find a track that is in some way connected.

It could be the same song writer, a common word in the title, a link between band names, a link to the lyrics in the first song.

In fact just about any link and often the more obscure the better.

I suggest therefore that we start a chain of our own.

This will work by one person suggesting a track following from the previous one and then the rest of us having a guess as to the link. Whomever is first to the link gets the right to suggest the next track.

Every 12/15 tracks I'll collate a playlist.

Who would like to start?

We need the track, band, year of release and any personal or impersonal information you might like to add.

Metallica - Master of Puppets - 1986

I've loved this track since I first heard it. I think it has sooo much to give. And it pleases something in me that's hard to identify. I just play it a lot.

I'll suggest a complete change of pace with

The Last Shadow Puppets and The Age of the Understatement - 2008

The connection is obvious.

The band is two people, Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane, originally of The Rascals and now a solo artist (check out Inhaler)

Wendy, I'm assuming that the "Shadow" is the connection?

I'll try to be a bit more obscure

The Sugarhill Gang and Rappers Delight.

Released in 1979 and the first hip hop song to become a Top 40 single hit.

Written by Big Bank Hank (no connection with Hank Marvin and not the link here).

Appears on various albums including Grandmaster Flash.

Samples a song called "Good Times".

2 points for the connection between this and Apache and 1 point for the next link.

I also googled it and found the following: Wayz of a Murderahh by Apache sampled Kool & the Gang's Good Times.

If that's correct, then I need to find something equally obscure.

You're all being a bit too clever.

The Sugarhill gang recorded a version of Apache which was a minor hit in the US following up their major hit of Rappers Delight.

Their version was quite controversial as it included lyrics from the Lone Ranger and many in the US considered it was a racist taunt.

I'll grant victory to Mr Victory on the grounds that he was closest.

What's next Paul?

(By the way, my game and my rules. As this is going to result in a playlist or two hopefully, no boy bands, no girl bands, try to stay away from "pop", nothing from X factor or other wannabe shows, no boy bands, nothing before 1950, extra points if you've seen the band and did I mention .. no boy bands). 8)

Stumped as to the link with Rappers Delight ... UNLESS

This is a reference to Dizzee Rascal who is, in some eyes a "rapper".

I'm not sure I would say that about the guy who is a bit bubblegum and lame when compared with rap stars such as Marshall Bruce Mathers III or Notorious BIG etc.

Otherwise Paul I think you need to 'fess up

The Sugarhill Gang were all from Englewood, New Jersey. Dizzy Gillespie lived in Englewood from 1965 until his death in 1993. I told you this would get me into trouble.

I'm confused. Does that mean that the level of difficulty in my last effort was appropriate or do I need to try harder the next time? I'm delighted to have another go, but can I base it on my last song, or do I need to go back to yours?

Paul, I think it was too difficult a link.

I'm a bit thick and it needs ot be a little more obvious and perhaps based on band names, puns, lyrics, album titles, etc.

I suggest that you go on from your last song selection.
