Classic films you've never seen (and some you should)

Post by webberg »

Stealing unashamedly from a topic on 6Music, what films have you never seen and which cause anybody you tell to stare at you incredulous?

I'll kick it off

Never seen

ET (too sugary)
Casablanca (don't know why)
Godfather (any of them)
The Shining (don't do horror)
The Exorcist (see above)
Alien (see above)
The Birds
Gone with the Wind (too long)

Some you should see

The Ice Storm
Inception
2001
Uphill to the finish

Possibly too many to remember/list off the top of my head. For starters:
Casablanca
Gone with the Wind
Citizen Kane
The Third Man
Brief Encounter

I'll never watch any of the above but they are all supposedly "classics" - I think it depends on the era you were born (like who's your favourite Bond etc). I suspect anyone under 30 (maybe 40) would not stare at me incredulously at all whereas anyone over 60 may well do

Aliens - best film ever in my list (based on first watching)
Inception - cracker
Black Hawk Down - in my top 5
Lord of the Rings - in my top 5 (I treat them as one film)

Classic films not seen:

ET
Sound of Music
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Casablanca
Mary Poppins

Films you should see:
Lord of the Rings (Extended versions only) - masterpieces of film
Alien - not for everybody, but if you like the genre...
Aliens - ditto

Films you should not see:
Alien 3 - blech
Inception -the most boring incomprehensible pile of twaddle ever to leave hollywood

Never seen:

The Little Shop of Horrors - I keep meaning to; it just never happens.

Must see:

Johnny Got his Gun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Got_His_Gun_(film) - the single most personally influential film I think I have ever seen.
56, 5'8", 78kg but trying hard to be less than I am!

I have become (un)comfortably numb

Schindler's list is a very good film but not something you can watch without feeling it deeply.

Have just seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which is excellent
Uphill to the finish

It's pretty good but not sure if it's a classic - the same genre and period as Risky Business but imho not quite as good.

Anybody ever see Johnny Dangerously? - one of my all-time favourites.

Can't say I've ever heard of Johnny whatever!

Just shows how uneducated in this genre I am.

At the risk of coming across as totally lacking taste or judgement, I've always had a soft spot for Rollerball which I saw as an impressionable teenager and really liked.

I see also that the National Lampoon films are being remade.

My fav was Christmas Vacation which my wife hates and has to go shopping the once a year I'm allowed ot watch it. #-o

Johnny Dangerously is a prohibition-gangster spoof with Michael Keaton from mid-80s, I think.
Another one of my standout comedies is The Lonely Guy with Steve Martin and Charles Grodin.

If you like early Steve Martin, try out Dead Men don't wear Plaid and The Jerk
