Music - first record bought and first gig

Post by webberg »

Time to 'fess up and tell us.

By an interesting exercise.

Stealing a theme from the Steve Lamacq radio show (BBC Radio 6 Music - weekdays 4pm - 7pm) we need,

First record you bought with your own money - be honest
First gig you went to with friends and not parents
Good day record - to celebrate
Bad day record - to pick you up

I'll start

First record = Dave Emdunds Rockpile and I hear you knocking = 1970
First Gig = T Rex (Marc Bolan) at Bristol Hippodrome
Good Day = (this changes almost weekly) presently Alive 1997 by Daft Punk
Bad Day = (varies around how bad) presently Personal Jesus and marilyn Manson

Don't be shy
Uphill to the finish

Nutrocker by Bee Bumble and the Stingers was my first record.

First Gig was at the Ilford Palais and was Billy Fury,Gary US Bonds and I think Helen Shapiro.

Cost 10s 6d including the coach trip from Southend. That was an eighth of my gross wages.

First record you bought with your own money - I think this was Hypnosis by Mud (back on the Mud theme again)
First gig you went to with friends and not parents - Bad Company at the Manchester Apollo
Good day record - seriously, can't think I would ever play a record because I had a good day, this so no contenders
Bad day record - Knick Knack by Bobby McFerrin (preferably watching the Pixar short at the same time - genius!)
60 yrs old, 76kg, 5' 10"
43Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old for this malarky

First record bought - Stand and Deliver by Adam Ant, from HMV in Halesowen, for £1.25

First concert - Meatloaf at the NEC - sometime around 1983/4

I'll get back to you on the good day/bad day as they change so often :!:

So Andy, Parallel Lines (also in my collection because Debbie Harry was hot, hot, hot  ) was released in 1978.

If you were 14 then, puts you in your mid 40's?

I saw Blondie in I think 1980. They had a replacement guitarist (in place of Destri) and if I recall I left early very disappointed as Harry was not on form and the signature single from the Autoamerican album, The Tide is High, had to be played twice because they made a complete mess of it.

Do think that they are pretty sad now but there is a fashion for old bands reforming and playing festivals which in my opinion is not to be encouraged. [-X

First record: Sugar Baby Love by The Rubettes!
First Gig: Boomtown Rats in Leeds.

As for the good/ bad day choices: just too many contenders.

I'll throw in another question: Most often seen group/artist: Alice Cooper, 5 times between 1983 and 2010

Think I may have been about 12, not too sure. My grandad owned/ran a pub most of his life so most of my records were straight off the juke box when they had been played to death and were ready for a change, when I brought the album I seem to remember having most of the songs on single!!!

Blondie has done quite a lot of work on the road over the last 18 months or so, I have never seen her live but having seen her on a chat show recently I think I will stay away if she comes to town, shattered illusions and all that....

Edit, just seen Lee's post, most seen group is Beautiful South, 3 times.

Most seen band - probably Biffy Clyro, but more by accident because they were on the bill of "bigger" bands.

Saw Slade 3 times in two weeks.

Seen 3 times Lindisfarne, Alice Cooper (just love "Elected").

I'll add some more questions:

Which band would you have liked to have seen "in their prime"?

Which band would you like to see next (ignoring any tickets you bought to keep your spouse/partner happy)?

PS mention of any boy band or girl band is forbidden - my topic/my rules.

For me on the above.

1. The Who. I would hacve given a lot to see them in full flow but never managed it.

2. Difficult. Perhaps The Vaccines?

First record I bought with my own money - 10cc, Things we do for love (grandad gave me some money for an ice cream and I bought a single instead)
First gig - Wings, 1979 (followed two days later by the Police, which changed my musical direction!).
(ref those two, am I really that much older than Mat & Andy!?)
Celebratory record - first one that comes to mind is Don't Stop me now by Queen. Current record would be Walk by the Foo Fighters.
Pick me up - Achillies Last Stand, Led Zep
Most seen band - Queen, 6 times
Would like to have seen - Led Zep. Only got in to them after the Physical Graffiti tour.
Would like to see next - think I might be tempted to a Jools Holland outdoor gig in the summer.

It's a long time ago, but I think the first record I bought was Imagine by John Lennon. I also think it was the album I bought, not the single.

I think the first concert I went to was Don McLean at the National Stadium in Dublin circa 1972. That was definitely a long long time ago, I can still remember...

First gig - Hawkwind, travelled to in a split screen VW camper van (owned by my friends' mum) packed full of longhaired, leather jacket wearing rockers. Found the gig by following the clouds of fragrant smoke. Great night. Ahh! Memories... :D

Oh dear another topic whereby my contribution will make Graham shake his head in despair

First Record - outlandos d'amour by the Police (1978)
First Gig - Phil Lynott in Nottingham (1984)
Celebratory Record - I am with Wolfie on this one - Queen
Pick me up - anything by Runrig
Most seen band - North Sea Gas (a Scottish Folk band who regularly appeared at Platform 1 in Edinburgh back in the early 90s - basically got dragged along by some friends but ended up enjoying the songs)
Would like to have seen - Queen
Would like to see next - no idea. :?

The main thing I remember from that concert was everybody calling for him sing Emerald (Thin Lizzy), but he wouldnt do it. Quite a shock when he died 2 years later.

Easy: Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who probably in that order.

Next band: Easy again: Muse. Also the best gig that I've ever been to, Muse at Lancashire Cricket Ground 2010.

First record bought - Beatles '65 and Surfin' USA by the Beach Boys bought at the same time.

First gig - Donovan and Merry Clayton at the Oakland Colesium in...it must have been 1968. Second gig was Sly and the Family Stone in 1969.

My parents took me to see Louis Armstrong when I was about 10 or 11 years old, but that doesn't count.

Would like to have seen - many, including Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Queen, The Who, The Faces (heard they were great live), Little Feat when Lowell George was still alive, Rolling Stones in their prime especially with Mick Taylor, Cream, Traffic.

Most seen band - Grateful Dead (yeah I'm an old Deadhead), probably a dozen times.
Next show - Chick Corea and Return to Forever IV, with Zappa Plays Zappa, tomorrow night.
Anticipating - Steely Dan in October and the Tedeschi Trucks Band on New Years Eve in San Francisco.

Most memorable shows -
Van Morrison last year on my birthday
Jesse Colin Young, Joe Walsh, The Band, CSN&Y at a single outdoor show in about 1973 or 1974
67 years old, 5'11" and 221 lb as of August 19, 2022
