Send us your music playlists

Post by webberg »

If, like me, you create music playlists in various media and often wonder what others might like or dislike?

Let's share playlists and expand our knowledge.

The RULES

Nothing offensive.
Limited to 12 tracks max.
No more than 4 from any one genre
You don't have to be able to row to them.

Perhaps we'll develop this into themed playlists a bit later?

Something to start us off with.

1. High Horse The Jim Jones Revue

2. Daft Punk Is Playing At My House LCD Soundsystem

3. Have Love Will Travel Sonics

4. Tiger Maximum Balloon

5. Treeton Fang Island

6. Love Will Tear Us Apart [Album Version] Joy Division

7. Iris [Album Version] Goo Goo Dolls

8. Knights Of Cydonia Muse

9. Hong Kong Garden Siouxsie & the Banshees

10. Happy When It Rains The Jesus and Mary Chain

Re: Send us your music playlists

Post by zootMutant »

I've skimmed through the "Musical Opinions" thread and felt a bit lost. I've heard of most of Strider's groups, but the others? Maybe less than 10%. Can't tell if this is because they are mostly British bands... or I'm the wrong age... or don't listen to the radio much... or just totally out of it.

Anyway, here's an eclectic list for you...

1. Magnetic Rag - Scott Joplin (1916), ragtime

2. Side by Side - Lee Morse (1926), jazz

3. It Don't Mean a Thing, If It Ain't Got That Swing - Boswell Sisters (1932), swing

4. Mademoiselle de Paris - Jacqueline François (1948), french cafe

5. You Can't Catch Me - Chuck Berry (1955), rock & roll

6. Wake Up, Baby - Sonny Boy Williamson II (1960), blues

7. Pulstar - Vangelis (1976), electronic/new age

8. There's a Hole in the Bucket - Harry Belafonte (1977), calypso

9. Puirt a Beul (Snug in a Blanket) - Capercaillie (1986), celtic

10. 1952 Vincent Black Lightning - Richard Thompson (1991), rock

11. Recherche d'Acadie (In Search of Acadie) - Beausoleil (1999), cajun

12. Katkera kaipaus (Bitter Sorrow) - Myllärit (2000), karelian

Twelve songs is not enough... but it's a good start!

Love the fact Mr Zootmutant that you have them in date order.

How cool is that!

I've heard numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, 10.

I'm about the load the rest into my music engine and have a listen.

Music is non age discriminatory Peter - get a good music engine and go where it takes you.

All music is good, some just better than others! =D>

EXCEPT - I can find the final artist but not the track - is it new?

Just had a listen and have saved the playlist for another listen tomorrow.

Do you speak French?

I would love to find that the Vangelis track has been put through a high contrast remix and made into some form of dance anthem. I can't see that it has so far but I'll look again.

Loved the Chuck Berry. Why do songs from that era have to be so short?

The cajun piece and capercallie. Interesting. Have you listened at all to the new "folk rock" type bands popping up now. Try mumford and Sons and their album Sigh no More. Similar (ish).

I'm afraid that the song about the motorbike did nothing for me. I was expecting something with a rock beat based on a high performance engine. Obviously not what I got!

Good selection overall and I'll see if I can find some pipeces that are related and suggest them.

I'm actually still working my way through your playlist... but I'm also installing a huge number of software updates, so I keep having to reboot.

What do you mean by "music engine"? Are you downloading the songs? Or is this an online thing?

Nope. Don't speak French... (or Karelian or Irish). According to my mom, I barely speak English.  As for the length... I think until the early 50s, artists were up against the limitations of the 78rpm record, which could only hold about 3.5' of music. I'll give Mumford and Sons a listen.

1952 Vincent Black Lightning is a bit of a rock ballad. What I like about it is that there is only one guitar... some really nice finger-picking, there. And, of course, there's the whole love gone wrong theme. Thompson once described his music as - "Boy Meets Girl... blood everywhere."

Interesting list Mr Ironarse.

I think you have a rebellious streak in you and were perhaps brought up on the spit and sawdust of the punk era?

Of your selection I think I've heard of 10 of them although I confess to the Uriah Heep original rather than the cover.

Pop quiz - where did Uriah Heep get their name from?

I'm about to load up the entire list for a listen though.

Mr Zootmutant, a "music engine" is an on line facility that allows streaming of songs but usually limited downloading unless a fee is paid. I use Napster as a default and pay £5 a month. For that I get 5 downloads and unlimited streaming. At work I stream via my work computer (a bit naughty really) and at home I use a Sonos system that carries my music all through the house. My kids are all music fans and often we can have 4 different playlists going on simultaneously in different rooms. madness but you get to hear some interesting stuff.

Other systems are available for free on the net.

Try Last FM at www.lastfm.com
Or Deezer
or Wolfgangs Vault
or Spotify

Any decent search engine will find them.

The second Zootmutant list I've done better with and have heard all of them. Have actually seen 2 of them live (Queen and Jethro Tull). Will load up and listen anyway.

Pop quiz - where did Jethro Tull get their name from?

I think Stan and his fellow music philistines should get out more 8)

Yes Graham,
I grew up with the punk/new wave movement and while most of my choices are post- 70's they are strongly influenced by punk/new wave.
As far as your trivia question goes, I woud have thought some connection to Charles Dickens' Scrooge but that is just a guess.
I don't use Napster or any of these other playlist engines, just put what I like on WMP and then rate them.
Have about 200-250 tracks that I rate as 5 stars, with most of the tracks in a similar genre.
My 4 star list is far more eclectic and covers most genres, with the exception of R & B and whitney Houston type wailing, which I detest with a passion.

2 points to Mr Ironarse on the Uriah heep question. David Copperfield is the novel.

What about Jethro Tull?

I see that a lot of your choice have the "EXPLICIT" tag on them! [-X

I would put Bloodhound Gang, Butthole Surfers and Dropkick Murphys in the same category. Sort of jangly folk punk. The others I've not got to yet.

What's WMP?

I use iTunes a bit but find that it struggles with large databases. I have around 700 gigs of music available on hard drive and find that the search and play function starts to creak unless I limit the library to about 100 gigs. Consequently we have 5 iTunes accounts and use the playlist function a lot rather than build new playlists.

Have to agree that some music does not get a play in our house. Anything from the manufactured "POP STARS" is a no, along with most diva's and torch ballards. I also have some pet hates which for no very good reasons include, Snow Patrol, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Survivor - in fact anything that I put in the category of US "soft rock" from the 70's and 80's. Dreadful packaged tripe.

I'll put up some more tracklists later perhaps once I've worked through Zootmutant's second list.

I think WMP is Windows Media Player. I use Foobar2000 which is a very simple, free music player that seems to be endlessly customizable. The database is proprietary, but very, very fast... although I have only about 175GB to search through.

I liked Mumford and Sons rather a lot. Thanks for the tip!

I like a wide variety of music, bet can't stand rap - maybe I'm just too old to appreciate it? Also, I get very annoyed at "blandness." This happens with every genre. Someone will strike out on their own, forging a new style of music. Other mavericks follow. But before long, the commercial value of the music becomes apparent and many others jump on the bandwagon without really understanding why the originators were so good. The genre then suffers a long drawn-out death until somebody invents a new style. Vangelis, Jarre, and Yanni were pioneers of electronic music back in the early 70s... this lead into the blandness of the New Age music of the 80s. But you can also see this trend in country, jazz, big band and (pop) rock.

On a side note, our cat cannot stand Bach organ concertos. She will wail harshly at the speakers, and then walk out of the room.

Yes Graham, Zootmutant is correct, WMP is Windows Media Player.
While a fair deal of BHG and Butthole Surfers is "explicit", I did try and select their less offensive tracks :) .

Here's another list from my "5 stars" - a more mellow one:

1. 1985 - Bowling For soup
2. Northern Star - Hole
3. Calm Like You - Last Shadow Puppets
4. Teenagers - M.C.R
5. Leaving New York - R.E.M
6. Californication - R.H.C.P
7. Hero Of War - Rise Against
8. Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
9. Wind Up - Jethro Tull
10. Leningrad - Billy Joel
11. Crystal Ship - The Doors
12. A Pack of Lies - Fatima Mansions

Of your original selection, i think I have just Iris and Hong Kong Garden as 5 stars, some I've never even heard of, and I find Muse, along with Radiohead, to be vastly over-hyped.

Certainly the last Muse album (Resistance) was awful. The early ones, especially Showbiz, are much better.

On the new PG list, I've never heard of the last band and definitely will not be listening to the Springsteen track as he is in the black hole of US soft rock. Teenagers is also perhaps an example of a good emo band that could have been great but rather sold out to the gods of commerce. A good example fo Zootmutant's theory about creeping mediocrity destroying something new and exciting.

RHCP - bit undecided. I really liked them and then saw them live on TV and was disappointed at how weak they were. Rather put me off.

Last Shadow puppets started with a bang and now have something to prove.

Here's a list that's very different and not for the squeamish.

Been caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction
Gone up in flames - Morning Runner
Only you can - Fox
It's Like that - RUN DMC
Sign no More - Mumford and Sons
no one knows - Queens of the Stone Age
Rock and Roll High School - Ramones
God is a DJ - Faithless
let's go crazy - Prince
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson
O Superman - Laurie Anderson
Knights of Cydonia - Muse

Mr Zootmutant, if you liked Mumford and Sons you might want to look up the following:

Fleet Foxes
Okkervil River
Noah and the Whale

I hear what you say about rap but give Enimem a listen. His "Recovery" album is very good. Perhaps also some early Run DMC, before they became corrupted by Aerosmith.

Interesting list Graham.

Agree with you to a degree regarding Last shadow Puppets - a bit samey though the track I chose is for me by far the standout amongst their, and Arctic Monkey's other stuff.

Same for RHCP - Californication and Under The Bridge are great and stand out above their other, rather mediocre stuff.

Re your list - heard most of it but Morning Runner and Fox are new to me - I like RUN DMC and Mumford and Sons( but prefer Decemberists in that folksy genre), not fond of QOSA, Prince and Jane's Addiction, and am completely blown away with most of Marilyn Manson's stuff(in particular Tainted Love which is streets better than Soft Cell's version).

Wonderful thing, music - always promotes an interesting exchange of views.

Morning Runner were a short lived band out of Reading in Berkshire. One album only and a few gigs. Album well worth a listen.

Fox date from the 1970's. Two big hits, the one I've listed and "Imagine Me Imagine You".

The lead singer is one Lucia Fox who I confess I had the hots for in 1973. Perhaps a bit before your time as they were in the glam rock era.

Thinking of bands who have gone bad I think I'd name Manic Street Preachers - now very MOR and Stereophonics. The latter's first album is a classic being very edgy and daring and moving into new areas. Their last attempt was absolutely terrible. When I heard that it was produced by the guy who did Nickelback''s last album I coudl see the resemblence but they've just surrendered their talent tamely in my view and are now on my "never listen to again" list which is depressingly long!

Thanks for that, Graham - will definitely look up Morning Runner seeing as they are from my current home town.
I think that when you talk of bands gone bad then U2 has to get an honourable mention and of the bands that started out bad and have got even worse then you can throw in Scissor Sisters and the entire prog rock movement imo :) :)
