Sad News from Devon
Our old dog died this morning. He had been having a bad time time for twelve months with fits. He also had a couple of operations on his leg and chest. Strong as an Ox in heart, lungs and other vital organs, he had managed the fits very well with the help of ever increasing medication and had recovered completely from surgery. This morning though, he went into a fit which lasted for an hour until sadly we had to take the decision to send him to Rainbow Bridge. We were with him right to the end. A sad end to a beautiful friendship.
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an
animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our
special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of
food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and
vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong
again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times
gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small
thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left
behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly
stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his
eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group,
flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been
spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling
together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and
you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your
life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...
His demise rounded off a bad 24 hours where I had had it confirmed that I have prostate cancer. Onwards and upwards - I'll be back!

Re: Sad News from Devon
Sorry to hear of the passing of your pooch. I've never had a pet that was "part of the family" but have seen my neighbours clearly very upset when one of their cats died a couple of years ago (I look after the little buggers when they are away on holiday). I'm sure after so many years it's a distressing time for you both.
Re the PC, that's a pretty horrible thing for any bloke to find out but as Alan says, you are strong as an Ox and do now have a diagnosis - so can now start working towards getting treated and fully fit again. We'll support you and Trish any way we can.
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery

Re: Sad News from Devon
Bill so sorry to hear about your dog. We lost a 2 year old cat to kidney failure (weird congential thing) 2 years ago and the vet staff was so great in comforting the each of my kids. They gave them each the rainbow bridge verse and fur "from over her heart".
I agree with Plummy that now that you have PC diagnosed you can move forward with treatment. We are all here to support you and Trish. I will keep you both in my prayers.

Re: Sad News from Devon
Bill,
That is one difficult 24 hours. Losing a pet is never pleasant. As for the prostrate cancer, hopefully knowing what it is may make it easier than 'wondering whether it could be...' It gives a definite thing to fight against. I hope that my thoughts and wishes can combine with everyone else's to help you through. You are strong and fit, and I know you're going to fight hard! Trish won't let you do anything else.
Thinking of you both,
Jane

Re: Sad News from Devon
Thank you all for your very kind replies. It made a very hard 24 hours a little easier.
Tysie our dog was our pal and great companion for quite a few years but he's gone now but I'll raise my game to counter the new challenge.
I've paid my entry fee for BIRC (and paid the hotel) so I'd better get on with it
Thanks again

Re: Sad News from Devon
Hi Bill
Sorry to hear from this. To have a dog or a cat (I have had 3 Maine Coons 15 years ago) is like having children and you feel just as happy or unhappy as with children. They become you children. I'm really sorry, but it also sounds like he became old and his time had come. Good thing that you were his dad. But fits sounds horrible.
Sincerely,
Mikkel

Bill, really sad to hear your news.
As a dog owner myself who has lost animals I perhaps understand a bit just how hard it is.
As for the annoyance of PC, I'm sure you have the spirit and strength to beat it now you know.
Positive attitude and negative splits! =D>

Hi Bill,
I like some other FS don't visit this thread very often, so have only just seen your news.
We've given up keeping pets as it's so hard to take when they die.
As for your prostate problem.... I now what the Marines are made of, even the old ones like you tough as nails. You can beat this I know you can.
All the best and see you at the BIRC.

Bill, as some others I don't visit this thread very often and was even more sad to read about your bad news. I lost a dog myself some years ago so I think I can understand how you feel about that. And I'm really glad you're taking a positive attitude towards your diagnosis. Hey, you're a british champion, you will also win this race towards speedy and full recovery!
