Musical Opinions - add yours here :-)

Mr Webber has made an analysis of certain bands and musical styles, like so (I've added a few comments);

White Snake? - good band but should have stopped years ago. OK live, one good album.
Genesis - Phil Collins backing group who never made a good record. Great live, albums are boring.
XTC - great band, great sound, pity about the lyrics.
Sex Pistols - got worse as they learned to play their instruments. Agreed
Squeeze - sentimental junk but great keyboard player. Jools is brilliant, go and see him with his R&B Orchestra.
Motown anything - no. Sort of agree.
Soul anything - no. Don't agree. Although not my personal favorite style, there are some fantastic soul records out there.
Dance/trance/techno - no. Totally agree (as our eldest plays it constantly when she's at home!)
Amy Winehouse - what a waste of talent - get your head straight girl. Agree. Walked out after 3 songs on her last tour. Albums very good
Norah Jones/Dido/Joss Stone et al - what's the point? Music is about passion and fire not this sort of lift muzak. Sort of agree, although Joss is great.
Drum and Bass - same song played at different speeds. Totally Agreed.

I'll also add this;
Country & Western - WHY?

OK, let's try a few more modern bands that might be worth listening to?

Last Shadow Puppets - remind me very much of early Artic Monkeys but with better lyrics
Hadouken - great energy and would be perfect for that last 200m in a 2k red mist gut buster
White Denim - hard to describe - go and listen
Ladyhawke - bit of an acquired taste
Fratelli's - feel good summer music - remember summer?
Liquid liquid - listen

Quite keen on White Stripes - first album is a blast

Presently listening to Mozart horn concertos and Blink 182

Best band name heard recently - Gaye Byker Boyz - music is rubbish but great name.

Well at least I have heard of the Fratellis and Mozart !!!!!

we need the opinion of BigSarge 1985 for the rest of those and sadly he's too busy celebrating finishing Uni forever to come on this forum

my delicate ears are still recoveringfrom the onslaught of the Foos at Wembley

I've been listening to this for the last week or two

http://www.gangstagrass.com/

Well worth a download (perfectly legal) and listen, sort-of of rap/blues music (it sort-of has the bad language rap generally has so if your sensitive to that give it a miss)

Why does music have to be passion and fire? i agree with the above Norah Jones and the like aren't my cup of tea but Nick Drake wouldn't be described with words such as passion and fire. However beauty, pain and honesty are there in bucket loads.

My music tastes includes

Kasabian (great live and 1st album was very good)
Nick Drake
The The
Anthony and the Johnsons
Joy Division/New Order
The Smiths
Simon and Garfunkel
Arcade Fire
Classical music (never know the names apart from Elgar's Nimrod)
Robert Johnson
Johnny Cash
Killers
And Viva Forever by the Spice Girls, I know I shouldn't but I don't like snobbishness so why can't I

Good input Gooner, I'd forgotten about this thread ...
Graham wrote "Norah Jones/Dido/Joss Stone et al - what's the point? Music is about passion and fire not this sort of lift muzak."
I replied "Sort of agree, although Joss is great".
We got VERY lucky the other week as I picked up two tickets for a short notice Monday night gig in a small grotty pub, in a small grotty area of Brum. Turns out Joss Stone was doing some "intimate" warm up gigs before her latest album release and summer tour. Absolutely fantastic. About 250 people squeezed in to a small room, I was at the back & Joss was not more than 20 feet away! She has an amazing soul voice, totally full of passion  and she had a 9 piece backing band on a stage the size of my dining table! Brilliant.

Methinks that Mr Stider is showing his age a little here.

For those fast and frantic sprints try

Okervil River
Twisted Wheel
MXPX
The Rakes
MC Rut

Let me know if these don't move you (quickly).

No more lift muzak please.

Mr Gooner - you're here to review the bands not the jukebox!

How was the music?

My views on the list from the forum.

The Ting Tings - great first song, poor second, jury out (she is very cute though)
oops forgot The Boss - Bored in the USA says it all
Fleet Foxes - one paced droning
Kaiser Chiefs - I can't beleive this band makes any serious list. Feel good anthems with little musical innovation and trite lyrics
Seasick Steve - There are better talking blues out there
Elbow - great band and have been for years
Metallica - way past their prime but a favourite of old
Kings of Leon - great last album. The next one will be the test
Pendulum - quite like them

Try Marilyn Manson's latest "We're from America" which is available on free download. Apologies for the language but a great swell of driving, pounding wall of sound.

Twisted Wheel well worth a listen

Did I mention that I have tickets for Oasis later this year as well.

Hi Graham, if it's the same set up as earlier this year, Twisted Wheel are the support for Oasis.
Opinion? I actually thought the music was very refreshingly good. However I thought the lead singer, and especially his foul language, was an idiot.

Oasis are on with Kasabian and The Enemy as support.

I was at Wembley yesterday in fact and really looking forward to going back there in July.

Graham
 apologies just thought I'd bring to the groups attention a great bit of kit,

Now to review
Okervil River Must have listened to wrong stuff as opposite of what I expected very slow
Twisted Wheel
MXPX
The Rakes
MC Rut The other 4 I, only my opinion mind, rather generic

The Ting Tings - great first song, poor second, jury out (she is very cute though) absolutely agree
oops forgot The Boss - Bored in the USA says it all oh yes
Fleet Foxes - not for me
Kaiser Chiefs - Does everything have to be full of pathos KC do what they do very well and with a degree of humour without the Cheesiness of the Hoosiers and my least favourite Scouting for Girls
Seasick Steve - There are better talking blues out there, maybe but Sir Jools loves him
Elbow - great band and have been for years, oh yes Rib cage and Fallen Angel absolute gems
Metallica - don't get it
Kings of Leon - great last album. Don't think they've done a bad album. Their father must be soooo pleased.
Pendulum ooh quite like this

Yeah Yeah Yeahs I'm only six years behind but just heard their stuff. Maps what a song.
