Nowadays on this thread, I am happy if I can identify The Country, let alone the song!
Surprised you haven't got it yet, Peter - early 70's.

Opening line :

" she's 41 and her daddy still calls her 'baby' "

Regarding country music, I really only know songs that were mainstream hits or became well know for some other reason. Some of Dolly Parton’s songs - Jolene, Stand by your man, 9 to 5, Kenny Rogers - Lucille, The Gambler, Coward of the County and maybe a handful of others. There’s one song that became very popular in Ireland a few years ago and I’ll put that up next time I’m in the hot seat.

I decided there was no way I was going to recognise this song, so I googled the lyrics. I see that it was a number 1 hit in the US, but never charted in the UK. So I guess it’s up to our American colleagues to figure this one out.

I grew up in South Africa at a time when country was about the only type of music which wasn't banned   , so that song was big over there.
I will leave it for a day or so more, and if there are no takers, then you post one.

Paul, I hope you are not waiting for me to respond. At best, after you give us the song title, I will be able to go #-o .

OK - looks like no-one is going to get it - its "Delta Dawn" by Tanya Tucker in 1972.

Here's another one - this line is one of the more obscure, most of the others are too easy and would be an immediate giveaway - clue : the 60's

"His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain"

It is finally spring here. Well, we did have a little snow on Friday morning, but it quickly melted, so that does not really count! The leaves are opening on the trees, and flowers are blooming.

So, in honor (honour) of Spring, the following, perhaps obscure, song.

"with a caricature of a face".

Those living in the UK or Ireland might perceive that as a clue. Those in the US, probably not!

The original show may have premiered in 1885, but it is still performed today.

That is certainly correct!

In my persistent and usually misguided hope that some of our viewers are more "widely musiced" than those posting above, here are some more lyrics:

"I've got to take under my wing
Tra la
A most unattractive old thing
Tra la
With a caricature of a face
With a caricature of a face"

Peter, there was a time when Gilbert and Sullivan did not appeal to me. However, for quite a while now, ( and because I am over 150 years old  ), my brain can not only appreciate Metallica but also, ( from The Mikado ).

The Flowers That Bloom In The Spring. Tra La.

Jill, I knew that our distaff team members from the UK are more sophisticated than their male counterparts. (Can you hear them in the background saying "Oh bother the flowers that bloom in the Spring"!)

You, of course, are correct Ms. Jill. =D>

Regarding the clue I was referring to, there is an Irish company that produces biscuits called Mikado, that I think are also sold in the UK.

Or, how about Paul, Paul and Steve, performing Three Little Maids From School and would they have to wear some tight underwear in order to reach the high notes?

Paul, Mikado biscuits are a new one on me and I have never seen them on sale in England, although that doesn't mean to say that they aren't of course. I'll keep a look out for them.

Your ' taking the biscuit ' clue threw me because although I knew the song, I couldn't make the connection ... and then I remembered the name of one of the characters: Yum-Yum.  Well, the biscuits did look rather moreish. :fswink:

Here is my offering - love this song.

You can stand me up at the gates of hell

I have been trying to think of a song that has not been used before. My first several have been used here before, sometimes by me, between 2014 and last month, and sometimes with the same lyrics. I thought of this unused one, which apparently was in the top 3 on the weekly charts in the US, UK, Ireland, and South Africa.

"You never call, baby
