A small suggestion, but I'm often too absent minded to right click on an external link on the menu bar to choose 'Open in new tab' (so as to still keep my forum window open). In HTML it's just a Target="New Window" addition to the link - is this viable/doable/worthwhile?

I think this is a very black/white argument! I actually did look this up in usability guidance and the guidance is that (so the back button works) you should keep everything in the same window and allow the user to make a choice about a new window. I suspect this is why it is the default behaviour.
If you are using Firefox/Chrome, I would be amazed if there were not a plugin to achieve this for you on all sites.
