Issue Tracking for the 2012 update

Where should the web site go - what should we do? Who has the time between rows?

Issue Tracking for the 2012 update

Post by Thomas W-P »

Please enter comments here. Things that are broken shall be put on the list to be fixed. Things you don't like shall be noted :)

Issues
  1. It appears that some browsers struggle with the menus. Certainly Internet Explorer 7. Firefox under Linux, Android and Windows is fine. No idea about Mac. Please help by reporting it as working with any combination?
Fix reports
  • Meterboard now fixed  I think it looks nice now, and I finally managed to override the clashing greeny blue we've had for years  . I can change any colours I like now. Pink and purple rows anyone?
  • Text was wrapping in the meterboard, it isn't now.I also managed to get it to capitalise names that are lower case. I have pretty precise control over the look of the meterboard but not the content at all.
  • Utility pages now working

Thomas, the meter board looks pretty much the same like before the update. I can't see the "new look"?

Yes, but I don't own that site. JL does. I've done my end, his site checks our template periodically and fixes itself. I'm not sure how often it does that. I thought it was every 4 hours, so I'll email him.

Looks like JL has updated the meterboard now. When you click "this is me", the line highlighting your name does not appear anymore. Any chance JL could take a look at that?

Good spot. It looks like this is *my* fault. I will get a fix going but it may take time to "take". All the links at the top are broken too :(

Thanks Thomas. Any chance of trying to increase the space between the weekly metres and season metres - the 2 numbers look joined up. Sorry to whinge

Either that, or Paul Gould did 23,74410,40015,00010,00019,25312,21321,097m this week, which is pretty impressive!

I'll keep at it, and think that I am nearly there at MY end, but I don't know how often the MB updates automatically. It might be daily. Since the template has not changed for FOUR years, I suspect it does not need to check that often!

I am testing my styles here:

Please comment - I can fix most things, it just needs the new template to update.

The header will remain broken until the template refreshes I'm afraid. And I can't change the blue around the tables either. I've emailed JL.

your link to the metreboard looks much better Thomas - much easier to read.
One other minor gripe, which may be a little selfish on my part. There is a lot of wasted space now on the left and right hand sides of the screen - that may be because of the widescreen monitor I use, but I must admit the old site did fill up the screen space better. Not a major issue and in many ways the new site looks better.

Actually I now know what you are commenting on. The decision to go to fixed width. This is for aethetics but also because more and more people view sites on smaller screens (phones etc.) With the large monitor you can also get a line going 30-40cm across the screen, which is hard to read. Most sites (BBC is a good one) are fixed width now, and you'll find it hard to find one that is not. So I think that it has to stay!

Do you mean the thing that allows you to make your signature and remembers previous entries?

I cut the version I made out because it was obsolete - the CTC one now remembers previous rows. But I guess I should have left a link in to it. I will fix that.

LATER: PB Image Generator now in utilities list.

Thanks for that Thomas and now my new observation posted where it should be :D

There appears to be a glitch emanating from access to the Metre Board. Once in the Metre Board try going back to the Forum and you get a "URL not found " message. Close your browser and re-enter it and you can access the FS forum again. Tried the Metre Board again and back to Forum and it's "URL Not Found" so it's consistent. It's happening on two Apple machines here.

The "This is Me!" function for hilighting your name on the Board no longer seems to work.

I can't say that I like the new Metre Board layout without the gridlines. It makes the Flag Column look untidy and if someone does not have their Logbook Icon displayed. their name drifts into the Logbook Icon column.

Are these fixes that you can apply Thomas or is it a JL function?

Just an observation.

I see the Utilities bar listed now but can't select the PB signature from the options list because as soon as I move my mouse pointer below line two of the list, the whole drop down list disappears - i.e once my mouse goes below this point:

OK. Thank you for the screen shot. I've not seen that.

A work around would be to click the top "Utilities" link and then the menu appears on the right hand side of the screen in a box. You may also find that the menu works away from the forum page.

It would be useful to know which exact browser and operating system you use, and whether the menu works on other (non-forum) pages.

I remember tearing my hair out trying to get the drop menus to work nicely with the forum, in the end I gave up and we just had the top level menu items. I would love to fix this. Diagnostic tools are way better now so maybe I can solve it?

The new Training Challenges forum isn't very visible, as it's a sub-forum under Training & Racing. Perhaps it could be renamed something like Rowing Challenges and moved to the top-level rather than a sub-forum?

By using the back button we can return to the Forum so that's a temporary fix.

I think Plummy's problem is that he is using Internet Explorer 7. I was able to find a PC using this browser (that is OLDER than Free Spirits - born in January 2006) and get exactly the same result.

Plummy, I guess your best option is to install a new browser. IE7 is very old (see http://theie7countdown.com/) and probably a LOT of sites you use do not work with it. I am afraid I am not going to work to be backwards compatible with IE7 since it is NOT standards compliant, and I work very hard to make this site a compliant site (hence the logo in the bottom left hand corner - which is hard to get once you start customising like I do!).

There are several alternative browsers. Google Chrome is up and coming and rather good, I use and love Firefox, but there is also Opera, Apple's Safari and many others besides (scroll off to the right). Try one of these. You won't look back at ie7 with much fondness I reckon. And they will carry over all your bookmarks. You could of course upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 if you are still on Windows XP.

I'm sorry if you feel this does not help, but I really think you will have a better browsing experience across the whole web with a better browser!

Now I am officially stumped.
