Site Update

Where should the web site go - what should we do? Who has the time between rows?

Site Update

Post by Thomas W-P »

At some point in the next week or so, I will take the site down for an upgrade. I am not sure when this will happen, and really am posting here to force myself to do it (I have been putting it off for too long). Hopefully I will not muck up and destroy everything.

So if you come along and there is a polite message saying the site is down, don't worry too much.

I have decided to do a complete nuke of the site and go to the completely standard look and feel. This is the only way I can be sure that everything is going to be back to normal. I will then slowly bring the site back to its former look and feel over the coming days. Hold on to your horses.

Woah, that was pretty painless. The site is now running on a completely "engine" though the style I use to give the look and feel is not quite done. Working on that now.

I'll second that - I was anticipating going through a period of "cold turkey" but didn't even notice any change

Thanks Thomas

Yes, I think I was more surprised than anyone. I think reading the manual carefully before acting is a good plan. It took me about 40 years to work this out.

I remembered something I'd not done overnight (Tapatalk for the few people that use it), and this morning had a play with adding modifications (this was hard before because it was not a plain vanilla installation).

Now,
  • people whose birthday it is should get a cake icon next to their name
  • moderators should see a notification if any posts are waiting to be dealt with (this should help us spot when new users' posts are waiting for approval

Yes, it was stupidly quick. Thought it would take a couple of hours in the first instance, then days of fiddling, but as I say, reading the manual made a big difference (plus finally ditching the links to gallery, which has now completely gone).

Ho! Just noticed that I'd lost the chat function. It is back now.

I could bake it, but you'd have to collect.

N.B. It has been pointed out that the Chat time is still 3 hours out. I have tried to correct it with no success.

Good spot. It appears that the xfruits.com web site that I use to aggregate all the blog RSS feeds is down. I have disabled the link for now. Anyone know of another good RSS aggregator? (If that has gone for ever it could be interesting recreating the blogs since I have not kept a backup. Not that many of the blogs are updated regularly now.
