WAARC - April 2013 - 60min

Post by AlanS »

April is the final month of the 2012/13 rowing season. Many of us will be looking to row some extra meters to try and hit individual distance targets. To provide a little extra motivation, April's Weight & Age Adjusted Rowing Challenge will be the longest yet - 60min.

The rules are simple:
  • Row for 60min on a C2 rowing machine during the month of April and submit your distance, current weight and current age either a) in public on this thread or b) in private to myself by private message.
  • Current weight is a weight reading that was taken prior to the attempt, and no more than one week prior.
  • You can submit as many attempts as you like, as long as they are always accompanied by your current weight and age (which may be different from earlier attempts).
  • The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 1st May at 12pm GMT.
  • Distances will be adjusted according to the details found here: http://concept2.co.uk/rns/adjustment
  • Points will be awarded based on adjusted distances, actual distances, and number of entrants. Adjusted distances will be worth twice as many points as actual distances. As an example, if ten members submit a distance, the highest actual distance will score ten points, and the slowest one point. The highest adjusted distance will score twenty points, and the slowest two points.
  • Points will be combined to determine the overall winner.
  • A leaderboard will be posted regularly during the month-long challenge to let you see how you are faring, with a final leaderboard posted shortly after the challenge ends.
  • Each Weight & Age Adjusted Rowing Challenge will be a standalone challenge, i.e. there will be no running total of monthly points.

Much more preferable than 2k! Thank you. =D>

Now, do I smell another PB attempt having just improved my 60 min PB? :)
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Good choice Alan. =D> We have been doing a lot of sprinter distances lately, 2K, 920m, 2.5K, 500m. [-( The hour is the only one, I really lack to do this season. :D

Been fighting with a cold and laryngitis for over a week but it seemed to be on it's way out so I figured a nice steady hour may be a good way to sweat out the remainder. As usual , I pushed harder that I wanted but when I looked at the clock for the first time properly it was already down to 32 minutes left so tried to push on. Hit a bit of a wall but managed to negative split all the way and the last ten minutes at 1:57.3

Finished with 14909m (which may be only the second time I've topped 14900 this season??) - weight 69.5kg (49yrs & 11/12ths  )
60 yrs old, 76kg, 5' 10"
43Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old for this malarky

Great start to this month's WAARC, with five entries. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

You've got a bit more work to do if you want to win this month, Mikkel. :fswink:

Ah I knew something like this would happen sooner or later...
The positive about doing 60 mins is that it will be a PB whatever the distance is
The negative - never done anything other than an easy UT2 60 mins session so it will hurt!!
Just have to work out when to do it given focus is the 1k at the moment for my OTW regattas, but I will have a go before the month is out!
Thanks Alan

I know! This was just a 16K row after 4.9K in @1:50. I think I will be able to do around @1:53 (I hope) And maybe faster if the training works.

Was supposed to do a 90 min OTW session this morning but been raining heavily nonstop for the past couple of days so my coach said we wouldn't be going out... so of course the first thing that comes to mind is that it's a perfect opportunity to do the 60 min WAARC!!

Total 13772 2:10.6 @ 20spm
weight 65.8kg, age 41

Got me 920 points for the Nonathlon as well which I was pleasantly surprised about. Felt good for the first 45 minutes, but the last 15 was a real struggle, felt had no strength left in my legs and was shortening my stroke. Still, was happy to just do it :D

Splits:
12mins: 2:11.4 19 (start conservatively, low stroke rate)
24mins: 2:10.9 19 (still feeling pretty good but know I have a long way to go!)
36mins: 2:10.6 20 (brought the pace up a bit from 20-30 mins, felt strong)
48mins: 2:11.2 21 (starting to struggle a bit - legs lost power, felt I needed to have little 'breaks' every 500m or so where I'd drop the pace a bit, hence slower pace overall)
60mins: 2:09.3 23 (Hooray!! It's all over!!)

Everytime I do one of these longer efforts I get more and more respect for those of you who do this sort of distance (and more!) regularly ^O^ ^O^

Great 60mins Other Alan! I reckon that could put you at #1.

Well done on completing your first hour of power, millie. And a nice pace too. :) Will you be tempted to try this one again? ;)

Well..................I think I will at some point, but unlikely this month - think my next long row will be the 10k as will be guaranteed another PB  . I really struggled with the last 15mins of the hour, so if I do 10k I won't have to worry about that :) (flawed logic I know as that would only work if I did the 10k at my 60 min pace..). But I have to say that it went quicker than I feared it would, and up until the 45 min mark I was maybe starting to see why lots of you like these long distance rows

Well done millie! You realise that 13772 is nearly 1/3 of a marathon don't you . . .

Well done Richard! I think just finishing the hour is a great achievement in itself, and a PB is always good!!
And definitely the more the merrier
Yambo wrote:Well done millie! You realise that 13772 is nearly 1/3 of a marathon don't you . . .
Actually no I didn't.... I had worked out that it was 2/3 of a HM so who knows in the future one day  but a FM is quite another thing....!!! I did realise during the last 15 mins of the hour that one needs to do long distance endurance training to do these sorts of distances though

Mikkel - you've got some climbing to do this month!

Well done Richard-anyone who rows for an hour is slightly nuts and deserves respect as its not easy =D>

A lot of people in our gym ignore the rower as they term it " its hard-core", it is certainly not for the faint of heart :D
