Re: Weight Adjusted Rowing Challenge - October 2012 - 1 mile
82kg 5:34.5 - had a slightly more representative attempt.
I think the 170 pound is the average weight of an OTW rower, who of course are impacted by weight as a penalty (via increased drag on the boat). I think this figure is probably out of date too, though, as big OTW rowers have got a lot bigger over time (whereas weight limited lwts obviously haven't).
The average weight of a OTE competitor would probably be much higher, as there is _no_ penalty for being much more massive on the erg, although there is a (probable) benefit in significantly increased power. Which, via circular argument, leads us back to why Alan is running a weight adjusted challenge in the first place...

Which is fair enough. I might do better if it was age adjusted, but I guess that's what the nonathlon's for.Mike Channin wrote:82kg 5:34.5 - had a slightly more representative attempt.

Re: Weight Adjusted Rowing Challenge - October 2012 - 1 mile
To be honest, it is still a sub par time - it's just that the last one was pro-rata'ed from a longer piece. Having thought about it, this was 1. pretty pointless, and 2. potentially not allowed (not defined in Alan's rules), so I got on and had a more representative attempt. I should be able to improve this further, as it isn't even a SB, but it is a start...

In the absence of a rule explicitly prohibiting pro-rata attempts, such practices are acceptable to the challenge organiser. In other words, it's allowed.Mike Channin wrote:it's just that the last one was pro-rata'ed from a longer piece. Re: Weight Adjusted Rowing Challenge - October 2012 - 1 mile
Great stuff guys, and some strong performances already this month =D> =D> =D>
Interesting comments regarding the different formulae I can't really offer any perspective regarding OTW/OTE weights and their variation in time, and I guess that either formula should lead to the same relative adjustment. It is interesting however to see such a difference in the weights used by C2 to make these calculations In the first calculation, all but Lwt (okay, slightly heavier than Lwt) rowers would see their performance times adjusted upwards (i.e. made worse), whereas the new weight would see all but the very heaviest rowers adjusted favourably. Even if the arguments as to which to use could go on an infinitum I guess the second would make us all feel better

I'd have to say that this exercise has already proved its worth for me in showing a much truer picture of relative performances. Great result from Tyleander there - massive respect for a time like that at 65kg
I'd be very interested to see the age adjustment applied as well, as I personally think some of the times from the older gentlemen are even more impressive than this lets on. Well done everybody!

I am working on incorporating age into this. When I have a proposal, I'll post it here for folk to comment on and then, if accepted, it can be included in these challenges.Mike Channin wrote:I'd be very interested to see the age adjustment applied as well, as I personally think some of the times from the older gentlemen are even more impressive than this lets on. Thanks for your comment Mike - the W adjusted times are very close between us! If an age factor also applied that would also be in my favour. By the way i live at Billericay, not far away from all the summers Olympic action!

That's one impressive time from Peter Tullett. An improvement of 13.3 sec. That's much more than "normal". He exploits his 65 kg greatly. =D> =D> =D>

Great result Alan That calculates to an adjusted time of 5:50.7 (Colin's adjusted time would be 6:21.1 but I bet he will have another go later in the month, I'm sure he can go much quicker than 6:08.4).strider77 wrote:Mine was 5:37.4 at 92kg-can someone do the maths for me

Nope, Stan, you have until the end of the month to submit entries. (Replying in this thread to keep everything in one place).Stan wrote:Is it too late to enter my time from Saturday.
5:54.3, (48 at the time), 100.8 kg
I'm going to convert this challenge into a Weight & Age challenge since it appears everyone is keen to incorporate age. That being the case, why wait until next month? I will use the two adjustments provided here: http://concept2.co.uk/rns/adjustment If it's good enough for C2 UK, it's good enough for us.
I'll post an updated leaderboard tomorrow - the order should look a bit different.
