This is all about being able to see other peoples' logs in Concept 2.

You swap IDs and enter them in the "Profile" page.

Cheers

I played around with the meter board a little more today and added a calendar view as well. If anyone objects to this, please let me know!

I see Nigel did a row today - thought he was on vacation? I tried the Mt Everest challenge, but it was too hot to stay on pace. :(

Thomas.

2x60 one morning and one after work. These are warm ups for some of the guys (and girls) above me in the Champions League positions. Just done 18k in 90min only 2.30 pace but building up to mental anguish for the long row planned in September.

Viewing logs

Post by webberg »

John, I think it means that the log owner has to grant permission or confirm permission. I suspect that C2 will send a message to each of those selected for a confirmation. Once granted, you should be able to see the log.

I had this issue when trying to view Gooners log. I can now do this but I think he had to do the above. I'll e-mail him to confirm but as of this morning he was out on a job and given what he does I've not asked any more!

As soon as I can I will give you the appropriate access.

Thanks webberg, just looking at yours there.
That is a great tool, has your comments also, great.

Thanks thomaswp, 2 HM's this season already, good job

As for laughing at your logs, looking at mine you'll find nothing but whining about the weather, my triedness, how it was a long monday (over 2 days since last row), my lack of strategy resulting in a fly and die. etc.
The # in front of my comments indicate a strapless row. 16C is temp. 16 SPM is stroke rate. My interval times are false, as I don't want to mistakenly rank a 5K 16:30 interval time, I also don't add bad failures and warm-up's as I generally only do about 300m warmup each day.

I am still struggling with what "strapless" is... I found this on the old forum
Strapless is about technique - getting the arms/back forward before the body. If you don't, you fall off. Low SPM is about pausing before returning for the next catch, really slowing down and allowing the boat to run. So you pull really hard, but relax on the return - hard to do - but when you are let free at any SPM, you'll sprint off like a cannon!
but I can't imagine how else you row. What is a "strapped" row?

I've always assumed strapless means that your feet are not strapped to the plates. This prevents you using your legs to pull you back down the slide. Instead you have to get your weight moving in that direction, i.e. arms then back moving towards the fan.

A lot of people do such rows to improve technique and co-ordination.

John, am I correct here?

A "strapped" row would be a standard row with your feet strapped in.

Strapless is not having your feet strapped in with the foot straps.
I put the straps behind the foot rest, otherwise my feet would slip on the strap.

As your feet have no straps on, you have to have a lower stroke rate to stay on. It tends to improve technique. Because if your technique is poor your feet will slip off.

When I started strapless, 25 SPM was the highest I could reliably row, at 27/28 SPM my feet would slip off about every 5 strokes. At the moment (with a lot of strapless rowing under my belt) I can now row 28/30 SPM reliably. But I would tend to put the straps on if going around 30 SPM.

I find it a confortable way of rowing long distance rows. For shorter stuff I need the extra SPM rowing strapped allows.

I don't know if I described that well, does the above make sense ?

Strapless - exactly right - all points above.

It's also hard to maintain for longer rows - tiredness and lack of concentration makes you dependent on having the feet anchored. I've done an hour strapless, but the last 15 mins were tough.

My C2 ID is 186043 for anyone interested.

Nigel isn't on holiday yet - but he is injured.
He's been advised to do some gentle 2ks and no more for now.
He's off next week, so hope he has a good rest and recovers.

Anyone know much about formatting on this forum and also on Concept 2 site. Some smart Alecs can get their names in colour or scrolling. How do they do that?

Just added your ID, great times think you're being hard on yourself with the comments. 6.34 for 2k. Truly awesome. You'd be in the bar after showering and giving an interview to radio 5 live by the time I finish. Am building up the courage to do a 2k tomoro. Haven't tried it since 2004 as it scares me.

Reciprocating ID'd

Post by webberg »

I think that in order for one person to view another's log both have to identify the other as a training partner. This requires an adjustment ot the "Profile" section on the C2 board.

Ah haaaaaaa. Now I understand. We used to do that as an exercise back in the dark ages when I rowed on water. I do it on the ergo for a laugh sometimes but never for a serious row.

It is very important for technique. As a physicist I can even explain why!

You need a force to keep your feet against the foot rests. To achieve a force you need to be accelerating throughout the stroke. Accelerating throughout the stroke is the way to move the wheel/boat faster most efficiently.

Thanks Neil, On my times bear in mind I'm 26yrs old, 6'6" and quite heavily build. So I've all the advantages and should be going fast.

I have had bronze, silver and gold Goals for the last 2 years.
Bronze this year is to get a sub 6:24 PB
Silver is a sub 6:20 PB
Gold is to get a sub 6:20 at the IIRC (Irish IRC)

To get these (possibly unrealistic) times I need to push myself hard, and be putting in times of approx 6:26 at this point of the year

The 2K is scary, It tends to be high speed but lasts for ages. On shorter distances at least the finish line comes quick, on longer ones your not going fast enough to have lactic buildup.
I'll be trying another next week, when my legs are fresh

Thanks. I run another web site (long story) and changed to this forum there at Easter. So that was easy. Less than an hour from idea to installation. The web site was more interesting. A bit of research and then that too was easy to get running. I just hope we don't get hacked!

Re a job - I'd have jumped at it a couple of years ago when I was a miserable management consultant, but I am much happier now I am back in teaching!

Hello Gooner Neil

Looking at your logs there, massive meters. 2 separate hour rows yesterday !!!, my longest row this season has been only a 45 min row.

On your comments you have "NN% fat", I presume that based is on your heart rate, does the PM3 calculate that for you (with the heart rate interface) or do you calculate it yourself ?

John.

I am a complete luddite when it comes to equipment and computers. It is my heart rate monitor that does all the work. Plug for Polar here, they have a great selection of heart rate monitors which are easy to use and dependent on value, desire do all sort of things like fat percentage during exercise, time in zone, calories burnt VO2 max etc etc. they also have a very good fitness website tool where you can enter your goals and it gives you a program. I'll see if I can find the e mail address.

I have HRM interface for PM3 but not working presently. Positive aspects you can see easily your zone without altering your hands and calorie expenditure more reliable. negative bit disappointing only does so basics with all the advances from PM2 to 3 you thought training via Heart rate would have been given more consideration.

Re the hour rows, its quantity not quality with me. Thats why the ELM challenges and CTC have helped otherwise I just look one day to do 14k the next 13k, this way my heart rate goes from a high zone to medium/low. Not very scientific, also hate doing intervals. When I cajole myself I do 10 or 20 x 500m but with 2 min 30 sec rest. This is probably far too long a rest interval but being 5'08 and a lightweight with poor technique I need time to recover.

26 and 6'06", have you kicked sand in my face?

Lastly will we tempt you across the pond for the BIRC?

Not this year, but I was thinking of going over if I ever got down to around 6:00 sort of pace. Maybe next year (if I hit around 6:15)
