12h Ergmarathon

Post by Grobi »

Hi everybody,

as some of you might know, Oliver Zeidler is a member of my otw rowing club (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Zeidler).

As the reigning world and european champion he has a good chance of winning an olympic medal in the men‘s singles. The final is scheduled for tomorrow friday morning 2:45 a.m. EST. We never had and probably will never have again a club member in an olympic final. Therefore we will be gathering at the club to watch his race together. To keep people awake we are running a 12 hour erging event on two ergs. From today 5 p.m. to tomorrow 5 a.m. we try to row as many meters as we can. We will then donate 10€ for every kilometer rowed to the victims of the recent horrible flooding in the western parts of Germany.

Unfortunately Olli missed the final this morning by 0.6 seconds. We, especially him of course, are devestated. Nevertheless we will run the event, it‘s for a good cause after all.

Dear Peter, how did your fundraising go?

That poor young man, Oliver Zeidler - perhaps if he had been able to have family and friends there to cheer him on, then things might have been different. How do you soothe away such disappointment.

My friend, Pat's, nephew, James Cooke will be representing GB in the Pentathlon. He is the 2018 World Champion and the 2019 European Champion. No family or friends there for him either. :(

Dear Jill,

thanks for asking. We rowed 302km, meaning 3020 Euros for the victims of the flooding:

It started thursday afternoon 5 p.m.:

and continued through the night while watching Olli:

He won the B-final but of course he was disappointed. So were we but we were also happy to have reached our 300km goal (and that this cold night was finally over...):

I think it's the first time I "rowed the night away" and I was pretty tired I can tell you, but the sight of the danube at dawn (not my time of the day really) compensates for a lot (foto was taken around 5:30 a.m.):

Good luck for your friend's nephew in the Pentathlon! It must be very hard for every athlete to compete at top level without the support of friends, family and spectators!

You should have gone out on the water for a quick 10k given it was so smooth out there.

Well done on the fundraising and 12hr row. =D> =D>

I actually had my rowing kit with me because I had planned to row the morning after. But then I decided against it in favour of a good sleep
