Excellent row Chris. I did the 5k restricted on a failed attempt merely because I had a better chance of finishing it and wanted to change it after multiple failures! Your 2k R20 is really impressive. Thanks for beating the heavies to leave me in boat 3 (for now!)

Thanks Iain, really did not enjoy the restricted row, The 5km was a pleasant surprise after, 13 seconds outside of a pb time, which after the 2km I will take. That was a really horrible CTC and not one that I plan to repeat! Hopefully the next one is not quite so horrible!

When you think many people do regular 30R20s, 5k R20 is a breeze. Always gets tough around 5min in, but unlike free rate the rate at which it deteriorates after that is much slower. Somehow can maintain 95%+ HR longer at R20 than free rate. Possibly because I have more to concentrate on (I try and pull every stroke at R20 by pulling on the times where the seconds are divisible by 3. I know that is much less strokes than allowed as it rounds down, but seems the proper way to do it!).

My last erg was last months CTC. I have been having minor injury issues and motivation issues.
Set myself a target of 2:00 splits throughout.
Found the 2k r20 pretty hard as I very rarely do rate limited erging.
The 5k was torture as I haven't done enough to have any staying power.

Irregular socially competitive rower. (b. 1966) Always hated erging. Started again for excersise in lockdown.

Managed a last minute entry to float a boat. Haven't rowed much this month (focusing on other fitness activities), so the long distance was tough for me. Praying August is a shorter one!

Amazing effort from the ladies and skinnies, but we seem to have lost the participation of some of our larger men now. Anyway, great effort to get 5 boats floated on one of the toughest CTCs.

I confess I'd been avoiding this one.
Have had a mediocre month with large gaps in my rowing and my motivation often beaten by the hot weather and sweaty conditions.
And then I read this thread, and decided I needed to just get on and do it.
(and for reasons, I also needed to do a load of the pieces to complete the Rowlympics)
Decided to do the standard approach of 5k open and then the 2k at R20.
Had literally no idea what to expect, having no idea of my current form (other than it was not great) and having never tried a 2k at R20, let alone after a hard 5k.
Plan was to see if I could do 1:54 for the 5k (just in case I could get near the pacing from the 3 mile part of last month's CTC) and then hang on through the 2k, notionally at around 2:00.
The 5k went OK, although I was hanging on at the end. Even managed a push towards the finish (hoping I wouldn't pay for it) and came through in 18:52.0 (1:53.6)
The 7 min rest is actually really long, so I felt reasonably recovered going into the 2k.
I found out that 2k at R20 is a LOT quicker and easier to face than the usual 30R20, and that (probably as some side-effect of my 'technique') the R20 wasn't really cardio/HR limited, and I could pull a lot harder than I'd expected, because of the long recovery.
Started slow, but quickly found I could go quicker and ended up with 7:41.6, which was way quicker than the ~8:00 I'd been expecting.
Ended up so much faster than I'd expected, so feeling pleased (although really it just showed I was badly prepared!) Then had to slog through various pieces to complete the Rowlympics challenge and keep Pete company!
