paulgould wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 5:52 pm Well done to all who have had a go so far.

I eventually got around to having a go and I got confirmation of why I should avoid anaerobic activity.
After I completed the row I bent over to put the cover on and I got ZAPPED by my defibrillator - I initially thought I had been electrocuted!!
I think the combination of anaerobic exercise and the high Beta Blocker dosage designed to take pressure off my heart combined to trigger off the device.
I feel fine now but will not be doing sprints again!!!

Thanks all, for the support - went into A&E this morning after the ICD alarm went off - they are keeping me in overnight for observation but the doctor said that all my tests have come back normal and she agrees that the BB dosage is too high and they are going to lower it👍👍

All is well but I am now an ex-sprinter😃😃

Good to hear everything is fine, ex-sprinter. The right decision I think.

Paul, glad the implant worked. A colleague of mine with such an implant was told they shouldn't have had shocks while conscious. Glad you are fine now and sorry to rub salt in the wound by going past you, although I expect neither of us will stay in boat II!

Had my go today. Decided to try and hold 1:49 until 380m left and then see what I had left, this was based on recent 1:49.1 1k. Upped DF from 120 to 125.

Time Dist. Rate Pace - Comment
0:32.3 150 35 01:47.7 - settled quickly as planned
0:32.5 150 33 01:48.3 - not feeling as bad as 1k,
0:32.6 150 33 01:48.7 - expected pain not materialising
0:32.4 150 35 01:48.0 - modest improvement
0:32.2 150 35 01:47.3 - sprint modest
0:13.1 63 37 01:44.0 - never hit high rating, legs fine to end
2:55.0 813 34.6 1:47.6 - better than expected, but left feeling I could have gone faster.

Normally I would expect my legs to hurt from halfway and need to reduce slide and up rating in a frantic sprint at the end. As legs never died, I never transitioned to the ugly sprint and believe that this cost me time. But no chance I could catch Jon, so I do not expect to be going again.

Nice one, Iain👍👍
First you beat my time, then you copy my high DF approach!!!

For the record , my time was 2:55.2 on DF 218 with an SPM of 30.75.

After a couple of 5K's the last few days I had in mind to take another shot on this one again today. Saw your time just before I started and well, had a goal for today :fswink:
The first half went ok, but after that my legs started to hurt more and more, especially the last two hundred meters. Thought about quitting several times but with the average pace still below the needed 1:41 pushed myself to go on.
Had to keep on going until the end, glad I managed to do so. No room for a sprint in the end as you can see from the table below.
Throat hurts as well after I finished as it usually does after a short exercise like this.

Overall: only two boats afloat yet. Ladies: please take the challenge and have a go at this distance. Over before you know it (is it???).

Nice one Fred.
Had a feeling I was reaching my limit with that last one.
Might give it another go once I've polished off the 200k for the Holiday Challenge.

I absolutely share that limit feeling, but who knows. Good luck when you try again.

Only 5k to go for my pin on the holiday challenge.

Had another go as part of my yardage.

Went off on target and was hanging on from 500m. Nearly stopped at 200m but managed to tough it out.

Sorry Joe, you were always too close in front for me to ignore a 2nd attempt.
Finally got to it today...
2:37.9 / 1:37.1 doesn’t really tell the story, as it was a battle all the way. Thanks for the push.

Merry Christmas to all.

Well done Steve!! I knew you would give it another go. That last 200m was really tough. My form fell apart and I ended up straining a muscle in my lower back. It's feeling better today but I'm done for this month. Good luck to everyone still going to try this.

Had a somewhat anaemic go at this today. That's a reference to my level of performance rather than my level of effort, because I was really out of breath when I finished. I really, really, really need to get back into the groove.

Anyway, finished in 3:07.4 @ 1:55.2 pace. Planning to row every second day between now and month end and hope to put in a more respectable effort before month end.

Unfortunately my penchant for leaving these to the end of the month has backfired. I had emergency surgery on Christmas day, nothing like being dramatic. I'm not allowed near any ergs or my home gym for 6 weeks. Puts paid to competing virtually at worlds as well. Life happens, just bad timing. All good though and back home next day. Counting the 6 weeks and designing the rebuild.

Good to hear everything is okay. Not having an entry for this month is a pity of course, but it's not the end of the world.
Get well soon, and a very good 2021.

Sorry to hear about this Lesley. Hope the healing goes well and it's not too frustrating.
Remember to take it gently when you can return.

Best wishes for the new year

Yesterday an attempt, didn't finish, didn't have the stamina to do so. Perhaps later this week another one.

Sorry to hear this Lesley👎 you have been so strong in your performances this year. But I'm sure you're return will be even stronger. Good luck with your recovery and return to full strength. The first phase to any successful recovery always involves cake 👍 as many varieties as possible is the key 🙂

I saw you needed a couple ladies' times, so I thought I would see if I could erg without pain yet. 4 weeks out from 3 fractured ribs and I was able to do short, fast strokes with little resistance without pain! Not a fast time, but it still counts :). Hopefully in a few more weeks I can return to all activity.

Lesley, best wishes on a full and speedy recovery.

Kevin, so close! Thanks for sticking to the training plan and not going all out. I wonder where the quick boys are? (I’ve prompted James).
