Web site move completed - spot a problem? Reply to this thread.

Post by Thomas W-P »

...at some time in the next week or so, the site will "go down for maintenance" and JonT and I will work on moving it to his server. We are not sure how long this will take, maybe a few hours.

At the moment we are hoping to manage it next Tuesday or Wednesday, but no promises.

If all goes to plan then you should notice no difference at all!

Let’s be honest. I won’t be in the driving seat! 😬

There will be intermittent issues as the internet (DNS) works out everything (I keep getting pinged back to the old server) but it should solidify over the next few hours.

The irony is I still can't access the forum (except through this backdoor). It's just the weirdness of the way domain names work their way through the internet (sigh).

I seem to be ricocheting between the two. If you see the "Transfer to JonT is complete" message then you're on the old server

Thanks.

But it was chicken counting!

And we're back... Apologies for that outage. Unexpected side effect of the transfer.

Given the magnitude of the task and inherent history of mods and patches over the decade and a half we've been around, the switchover appears to be going well so far. Thank you to you both for your efforts.
One thing I have spotted is that the meterboard appears to no longer show the automatic calculation of how many metres you are ahead/behind the others on there. Is this something than can be re-introduced over time?

Yes, I think the plan is to slowly make mb3 behave like mb2 (there is a link to mb2 at the top of you want to see that info), but mb3 is way more powerful in other ways and does not need rolling over, so it's the future!

As Thomas said, he and I agreed that this was a good time to switch over to the new version of the Meterboard even though it is not fully functional. The older version is still available from the link at the top of the Meterboard page. My task over the coming weeks is to reintroduce the Meterboard function that are missing (e.g. turbo mode, gap to other rowers, challenge key). When I eventually have that finished we get everything we used to have together with the added power that Thomas has introduced into the latest version.

The Forum page lists today as Strider77's birthday. Previously his birthday occurred in January. This could be some sort of problem. Or else, he gets twice as many presents?

Peter - where are the birthdays displayed? I will take a look, but this is something I have not seen on the forum before.

Jon, when you are logged in, the day's birthdays are displayed at the bottom of the full Forum page, below the list of currently logged in members. Previously, (5 or 7 years ago?), you did not have to log in to see them, but that changed.

Got it. I’ve never noticed that before. I’ll hunt the code down when I get a chance.

EDIT - I just checked his profile and his birthday is indeed today, so things are working correctly. There isn’t a way to check whether this is the second time that this has been displayed as his birthday, but I will keep an eye on this and see if anything odd crops up. Thanks for raising it.
