June CTC

Had my first attempt at this today. A fairly lacklustre 3,858m @ 2:04.4 average pace. But it gives me something to target.

Only two entries so far by Free Spirits, so I'm sitting proudly in FS1. Long time since that's happened!

That is a bit unusual, especially given it's our challenge this month #-o

I think quite a few people have been focussed on the Heptathlon; I know I have. And today was the first time ever I couldn't row because of the weather! My house is still an abandoned building site, so the only way I can get on the erg is to put it together in the garden. It's been raining on and off all day, so I've been on the bike trainer instead - I managed to fit the bike turbo trainer in the spare bedroom.

Feeling better now than in a long, long time! Today I got to 4075m! Sorry to kick you out of Boat 1, Paul!

I've done a bit more erging over the last few weeks (usual reason... an injury or two preventing me from running as much as I'd want), so thought I'd give the C2C a bit of a go

Ouch! Thats deceptively tough! (Sorry Erik 8-[ )

Suspect it'll take me a couple of weeks to regain even a little fitness. Was your 4,372 flat out or is there more in the tank?

Has anyone any thoughts on pacing. I'm guessing average pace is mid way between 2k and 5k pace?

Maybe not flat out, but not much more in the tank at the moment.

Mat’s and Morten’s pace are definitely out of reach!

I think that's very dependent on how fast you are. If your 2k pace is sub 7, then I think your overall pace will be closer to 5k pace than 2k pace. On the other hand, if your 2k pace is 8 minutes plus, your overall pace will be closer to your 2k pace than your 5k pace.

Or is it the other way round? (Only kidding!) (Or am I?)

16' rowing, so for virtually everyone less than 5k distance with 6 min rest. The Walpole Challenge was 5k-3 (so midway between 2k & 5k). That was over 5k, slightly more rest, but 2 not 3 rests. I would have thought that this is a little quicker for all and quite a bit for us mere mortals. Pete claimed 5 x 750 r3:30 was achievable at 2k pace. The first 2 intervals here would be 4x750m at 2:00 split, ie half the rests and each rest only a little over half as long. 3' would be 750m and 1' won't effect the average that much. So I think significantly over 2k pace for all. So I think 2k +2S or so. That said, I haven't tried yet, what do those that have think?

Good to see more entries coming in. I still think the Covid restrictions are reducing our numbers quite a lot. We still don’t have a boat afloat #-o

I did a version today with rating limited to 22/22/24/open. Managed 4115 at 1:56.6. So that is around 5k - 3. I didn’t feel like I was at my limit, but the HR Monitor disagrees! If I thought about HR as I was rowing I suspect I would stop ImageImage

As Jon mentioned, been busy with the heptathlon last week. Probably I'll do this tomorrow, not really sure about the pacing, I think I'll start somewhere between a 2K and a 5K pace. See what happens.

The lovely Jennifer has been doing around 30 minutes warm up on the erg as part of her exercise routine while her gym is closed. So I asked her to do the CTC this morning at her usual warm up pace.

Result was 3182m @ 2:30.8 pace. And we have our first boat floated!

Good to see a boat afloat, Paul.
Personally I didn't finish the CTC today. It was to long since I had eaten and felt quite weak during the first seven minutes. During the following five I HD'd. No more opportunities today I'm afraid. Better luck next time.

Close again, Tako. Only this time, for now, to my advantage. 7 meters. Had no idea I was that close. My first 7 minutes were in a 1:53.1 pace, didn't think I could make up for that in the last minute. But very happy with the two minutes rest. Just enough to finish the way I did.
At least now I know how it feels (ugly) and have something to aim for if I might want to try this again.

Had a go at this last night hoping to start off around 1:57.0 to keep me in with a shout of being near JonT (as he'd avearged 1:56.6 overall). Managed 1:57.1 and 1:57.0 for the 7 and the 5 but then it was just hanging on as I was well and truly done in already. Finished with 4128m, a mere 15m ahead of Jon but at least, for once I've got my nose in front. I was a bit trashed at the end so I don't think there's much, if anything more in the tank.

We currently have one boat afloat and three others ready to leave shore but for the lack of a female crew member. Hopefully some of the ladies who have access to an erg will join us in the challenge soon

Two boats now, thanks Linzi.
I had a chat with a friend and she may give it a go. If she does I would expect her to raise the bar for the ladies.

A quick question.
When I did my effort the other day I got 4290m but the data also showed 72m rest meters. What is this? Is it overrun after the time? Should it be included in your total?
You have put in the energy to make it happen.

These are just the metres from the spin down at the end of an interval or as you are spinning up to get a flying start at the beginning of any of the session except the first one. Given they are outside the times of the intervals you should not count them in your total for the event.

My wife (Linzi) has taken to some morning exercise. Generally its the treadmill, but sometimes the erg.
Always in front of catch up TV and will never be quick. This was part of an hr piece and I just took the ave time to fill a seat.
I've been very lacking in motivation this month, after 244k in May (I think I may have over done it). Pencilled this in for Thu though.

Daughter Clare is living in a Caravan whilst waiting for a house to be built in Coleraine Victoria but has promised to organise her machine and help with another team.

As promised, I forced myself from the sun lounger and sweat it out on the erg.
Went ok considering the heat.
Nice neg split for 4378 / 1:49.6
Got to laugh, 1m behind Fred doh! #-o
