2020 weight loss thread

One of the many ways in which being a member of Free Spirits helped me over the years was by forcing me to keep an eye on my weight. In order to do this, I opened a weight loss thread each year and posted updates on a regular basis. So I've decided to start a 2020 thread.

I have 3 designated weight zones:

Green - less than 95kg
Amber - 95kg to 99.9kg
Red - 100kg or more

At present, I'm dangerously close to the red zone, hence an urgent need to start keeping a better eye on things. So here goes:

Date________Weight (kgs)_____Weekly Change_____Overall Change
15/05/20______99.0

I'll post weekly updates over the next few weeks, but may revert to less frequent updates if I can get closer to the green zone. If anyone wants to join me, I'd love the company.

Paul

OK, time for the first update.

Date________Weight (kgs)_____Weekly Change_____Overall Change
15/05/20______99.0
22/05/20______98.0______________-1.0_______________-1.0

Not a huge change, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Do you really reckon 1kg in a week is not a huge change Paul? I would take that all day long! Well done fella! Now go and do it again this week...

Thanks Dave. I'd certainly be happy if I could consistently lose 1kg a week.

Second update.

22/05/20______98.0______________-1.0_______________-1.0
22/05/20______97.9______________-0.1_______________-1.1

If I continue this rate of progression, I'll lose another 10 grams next week and I'll be 97.89 kg.

Looks like nobody wants to join in on a weight loss crusade.

Anyway, another week, another miniscule weight loss. At this rate, it will be Christmas before I reach my target of 95kg.

I'll play along.

Bur first some background.

I've had my Model C since 1994 and had times when I use it a lot and some years when I've given it up almost completely. Last year was one of those years. I only did 355 km in the 2018/2019 season and 631 km in the 2019/2020 season, most of that in 2020.

I was diagnosed with a low grade Stage 1 prostate cancer in September of last year. Not much I can do about it at this point except watch and wait. I decided that one thing I could do is try and improve my overall health, so I made a commitment to step up my exercise and eat a healthier diet. So here are the results so far.

I did almost 200 km in May. I'm a little behind that this month but hope to catch up. I'm also swimming laps a couple of times a week now that the weather is nice. I also do a lot of yard work on weekends (I live on a one acre lot). I gave up eating red meat, though I still eat chicken or fish once or twice a week. The Covid-19 pandemic has actually been a great thing for me, at least health-wise. I've been working from home since March, and the absence of a 45 minute commute twice a day has given me a lot more time to work out.

I don't have weekly data, but here's what I've done since September. I'll try and check in regularly going forward.

I guess I just passed a milestone in SI units!!

Thanks for joining in Mike. Sorry to hear about your health problems, but it looks like you've caught it early on and hopefully everything will work out OK.

You've lost a decent bit of weight over the past several months and are getting quite close to my weight. Maybe we can have a race to see who is first to get under 95kg!

Thanks Paul. That seems like a worthy goal and would put me at my lowest weight in 10 years. 210 lb in American English...

At that time I had been on a low carb diet, which wasn't sustainable in the long run. This time I'm doing it differently and actually enjoy the change in diet.

I'll make 95 kg my goal for the end of July, which seems reasonable enough.

Not such a good week for me either, at least in the weight loss area.

We had a small Father's Day pool party in our yard on Sunday. It's the first time since March that we've seen our two (grown) children and their "significant others." I'm afraid that I have some work to do to counteract the effects of large amounts of food and beer.

Paul, you nearly halted it this week. I find that I always put a kilo on when restart rowing (presumably extra fluid), so every sign that you will be back losing weight for next week!

Well, I'm back to where I was two weeks ago. I guess, under the circumstances, that's a good thing.

Big holiday coming up this weekend though, and will probably have the bbq up and running. There's always something...

Nice work Paul.

I weighed myself this evening and came up with 216.4 lb (97.25 kg) but that was just after rowing 15 km in 86 deg weather, so I’m not counting it. I’ll weigh in again on Tuesday or Wednesday morning and see where I am then.

Daily weighing. The rules:

(1) First thing in a morning.
(2) After the bathroom.
(3) Before any food.

No exceptions. Oh, OK. We’ll let you off with a cup of tea...

I have recently got in to the habit of weighing myself in a morning, as above, and then in an evening, perhaps after a workout. OCD perhaps. I blame the lockdown.

For long and/or intense rowing sessions or bike rides, especially on a hot day, and particularly when I perhaps haven’t/couldn’t rehydrate adequately ( ), the latter is often more than 1kg less than the former...

OK, here's my result from this morning. Looks like I'm getting back on track.

When I saw my Doctor on March 12 he gave me a goal of 10 to 12 pounds in six months. It's been four months (minus three days) and I've lost almost 16 pounds, so I'm happy with that.

Image

I weighed myself yesterday after four hours of heavy yard work in 85 degree heat and came in at 214.25 lb. And I was drinking water regularly. That's pretty typical for me when I sweat a lot.

OK. Time to go back to the drawing board. Not only did my weight shoot up this week, but I’m back in the red zone. #-o   I seem to have lost all motivation to behave myself food and drink wise. I also haven’t been on the erg so far this month, having crocked myself doing the CTC on June 30th. I think my back is a bit better today, so I’ll try to hop on and do a long slow session to burn off some calories.

Good luck Paul. Don't get too frustrated - remember you're in it for the long run.

I've been very lucky this year. Healthy enough, for the most part, to work out regularly. And with working from home I have more time than ever before to do it. I had to take a week off in June because I jammed my ring finger so badly I couldn't grip the bar and last week was just too hot for a few days but, other than that, no problems. I've set a goal of 2 million meters for the current season, which would be almost 800K more than any season since I've started uploading to the C2 logbook in 2011. Right now I'm on a good pace with 420,746 meters (# 41 on the FS meterboard - I could #40 by the end of today). I don't know if I can keep that up for 12 months but I'm going to try. I don't erg very fast but I put in some long workouts.

Image

I also had somewhat of a "food epiphany" earlier this year. I came to the conclusion that red meat is not good for me or the environment, especially here in the western US where cattle ranching takes up an inordinate amount of land and water. So I decided to do my small part, and stopped eating red meat. I'm not a vegetarian or any kind of food saint, though. I still eat chicken or fish a few times a week. Also eggs and cheese. I make a lot of soups based on different kinds of legumes and vegetables, and sometimes add a ham hock for flavor. But cutting out large hunks of red meat has been a big help for my weight loss. And not as difficult as I had imagined. Just have to learn to fix tasty meals without.
