Well, today then... my first attempt. Perhaps antoher one later this month. Almost two seconds behind Peter. If I want to overcome that gap, I'll have to do it in the first part I think.
I started out way too fast in the first 1000 mtr, held back for a bit, perhaps when I row a more even pace throughout that piece it will be better.
But well, Peter is having another shot as well, so those two seconds won't be enough I'm afraid.

Good luck again everyone

Very good row Fred! I wasn‘t intending to have another go but as I can already feel you breathing down my neck I guess I have no alternative  :fswink:

In order to give Fred a proper target (two seconds is not enough :D ) I had my third attempt last night. Plan was again to beat last time's pace in every rep. This is how it went:

Unbenannt.JPG
Unbenannt.JPG (18.07 KiB) Viewed 1660 times
All I can say is it HURT. After rep #1 I really needed those 3'30'' rest. Rep #2 started ok but soon became quite unpleasant with about 300m to go. Only the thougt "after this one the worst part is over" kept me going. Rep #3 started with already heavy legs, but again knowing it's only a 250m after that one helped mentally. The final 250m were simply short and painful :D

I managed to beat last time's pace in all but the last reps (the starting 1k is actually a season's best for me), so overall I'm very happy with this improvement, although it's only 3.4 seconds.

Over to you Fred :fswink:

Thanks Max, although nowhere near your impressive rowing will be, once you'r done with SIRC (good luck for that by the way)!

Well done Peter! At least you don’t feel you need to do it again now 😀. (At least I assume you don’t). Good luck on Saturday Max.

I gave it a try just now but I quit early in the second rep. Had some lower back problems since last saturday and though it felt better during the day today, when I started to row the 750 mtr I felt pain so I thought it would be wiser to stop. The first 1000m was more then 4 seconds faster then last time, that was promising, but no...
I think you're safe as far as I'm concerned this month Peter. Perhaps a careful IRL attempt before the end of the month but no sprinting for me now I think.

Good luck rowers

Fred

Well done all - a deceptively difficult challenge!

I'm back on the erg which must mean I'm injured and can't run :? Fortunately, it seems that I can row with a broken foot (though the cast does prevent me coming all the way forward at the catch! )

Took a look at this and thought I'd give it a go. Ended up with 8:20.3 (1:40.0, 29). Splits were 1:40.6, 1:40.9, 1:39.8, 1:35.8

Got at least another couple of weeks before the cast comes off, so I'm sure I'll give it another go and see if I can manage not to die in the second interval

I don't know whether to laugh or cry Mat!
First of all, I hope you are taking great care not to crack the cast and do any damage ... but it's great if you can use the erg whislt waiting for the full recovery =D>

Mat, that is of course mighty impressive to row this time with a broken foot! But like Steve said, take care of that foot and don‘t bother the healing process by wanting too much too soon.

Fred, take it easy with sprinting if your back is hurting. Good luck with the IRL, this longer piece of rowing shouldn‘t do any harm to your back :fswink:

Louise, I‘m not sure I‘ll be having another go. The last one really felt tough! Let‘s see how the week develops.

Thanks Steve, thanks Peter. It's okay to laugh

Its the 5th metatarsal thats broken (displaced fracture), so the cast is there really to hold it in place so it can heal (and to stop me doing anything stupid - I waited 3 weeks to go to hospital thinking it was a soft tissue injury and only went after 20 miles of an ultramarathon left me thinking "perhaps I should get this looked at" ). There's no problem walking on it and no pain from rowing so hopefully I'll be okay

Well done, Mat :!: =D> Good to see you back, but of course not ideal with the broken foot :!: Good thing that you are allowed to walk on it and there is no pain coming from that :!: 8)

Finally back to my erg in florida for the winter so it will be much easier to participate in challenges again. First time rowing in a couple months, so I was just happy to finish and get another boat afloat.Image

Great row Felton - sound painful  Well done Janet =D>

Took a second a final shot at it this afternoon - found it incredibly hard, but managed to improve on all intervals so pretty happy with the result :D

Met up with Andrea at her gym and decided we'd both have a go at this (my last effort was still mid-chesty infection) and for her first effort. Took about 15s off my last time down to 9:16.2 ( 1:51.2 average ) - moved me up a boat too :-)
Andrea should make an appearance on boat 1 methinks given her pace !!

Sorry for leaving this so late. I had meant to row it yesterday but my wife reminded me we were going out for lunch. Unfortunately I picked up a nasty stomach bug and was going to give it miss today. But then I got to thinking about Matt's foot and Plummy's cold and thought just do it... I can always start slowish and HD if needed. But it turned out far better than expected in 8:20.3 @1.40.0!

Great rowing everyone
