No more sprint stuff, if you ask me!

What about:
4K + 7k with 1min Rest?

Free = 4 letters
Blank = 1 space
Spirits = 7 letters

Alternative addition: 1min Rest and another 5k???

Blank = 1 space
Rules = 5 letters

I guess the total of 11 or 16 k might exceed a limit??? So capital letter 1k, and small 0.5k??
2,5k 1’ 4k 1’ 3k

Along similar lines (but using a Scrabble score generator (!!!):

Free (7 score, 7 minutes....)
Spirits (9 minutes)
Rules (5 minutes)

Tako, Ian, Nice ideas :fssmile:

A look at how we have done this year shows we seem to do slightly better at the longer ctc distances rather than shorter ones. The exception is May's Barcelona 1992 when we were 24th out of 99 which I think was our best performance. (In June's 10k we were 21st but out of only 75 teams).

Anyway, that got me thinking so I looked at our Nonathlon scores to see our relative strengths. This shows we peak in the area around 5k, 6k and 10k. I should add that the Marthon figures is inflated by Guy's awesome score and the fact few people have completed it!

As the CTC has recently been predominantly non-ranking sprint type intervals, I'd like a nice tidy ranking distance 5k (which also ties in with the Devon IRC - ;-))

Very creative ideas so far...but i also thought about a unrestricted ranking session 5k or 30min

I guess the sprints are popular because with many little sprints you are able to create a creative session...and the main reason of course is...the majority do like sprints...e.g. : 123m 1min rest 456 m 2min rest 789m 3min rest 1000m 3min rest 987m 2min rest 654m 1min rest 321m to finish the crescendo-decrescendo harmony of pain by free spirits...ok no more sprinting...but i do like the name of the session...so let's be creative by giving our session a cool name 8)

Our participation in CTC has been fairly consistent in the past 12 months, but slightly higher (38+) in:
1000m/3’r/992m
6km
200m

From Rodger in last thread:
Our last five [6] choices were:

[January 2017: 4 x 4 min / 4 min rest]
August 2015: 3 x 9 min / 3 min rest
October 2013: 3861 m (for Gaye McOnie)
July 2012: 6k
April 2011: 3 x 1k / 4 min rest
October 2009: 10k

Looking at that list I would tend to agree with Dave that it would be time for a straight 5k. Or at least a longer ranking piece.

Personally I would prefer the 30min as it is common on RowPro and we might “help” each other there (for those using RowPro). Also it is a distance that I need to improve for my Meta-Nonathlon score ;-)

Mashup with Tako, it could be 1000m for first letter and 100m for others. That gives
Free 4300m
?rest
Spirits 1800m

How much rest would this need to match a Devon 5k pace?

[Rules 1400m]

That is the most evil routine I have ever seen!!!

Good point about participation, the more boats the better.

I am in favour of staying with the quirky direction the CTC seems to be going in - I like Ian Bee's idea.
There are already 2 competitions which cater for ranking distances - the Nonathlon and the IRL - imo we don't need a third.

For the IT geeks among us. Converting freespirits to hexidecimal gives: 66 72 65 65 73 70 69 72 69 74 73

11 sprint intervals with 60 second rests? I hate sprints by the way #-o

Or add in a space "free spirits" and mix them up and you get 667 265 652 073 706 972 697 473

I like some of the suggests below a lot better by the way :)

I don't like the idea of a standard ranking distance.

It looks like we will have the October challenge as the September challenge will be given to Team Oarsome to honour their member George King who sadly passed away:

„Those of us who have been fortunate enough to spend time in the company of George King are immensely saddened by his recent death. I would like to suggest that we mark the passing of this great man by allowing his CTC outfit, Team Oarsome, to nominate a September challenge. Other challenges would then move back one month.

Regards,
Joe“

I support the idea that Team Oarsome get the right to choose the September ctc. Also if that´s our Team´s decision, that some representative from us communicates this to a broader audience :!:

Although I can't find it right now, I have a memory rattling around in my head that I suggested we do whatever distance Gillian Burrell preferred and could manage. I remember a post from Roger Burrell stating that she cannot cope with the complicated ladders and intervals being commonly used for the CTC so as a mark of respect for the effort she has put in for the team over the years, maybe we could go with whatever allows her to take part...

Maybe Roger B advise his thoughts on this?

Personally I don't like short rests between intervals, wouldn't mind Claudius's suggstion if the rests were increased from the 1k onwards by at least 1 min each. On a PM3 at least the minimum distance you can set is 100m. Although I am not a fan, I would like an incentive to do an all out 5k. Although I believe HM was once set, the general rule was that it should be an hour or less including rests etc for most participants. But I agree that we should agree to allow Team Oarsome a go first.

There are a number of posts on this Plummy. Such as

I agree, it would be useful for Roger to give us some guidance, or we just choose a simple, single distance maybe.

I agree. Let Roger and Gillian pick the challenge or at least set the outline for what is suitable.
We have an extra month, so no hurries.

Claudius, perhaps you can change the September in the title to October?

Hi Free Spirits.

I sent a message using the 'contact us' facility to your administrator last Thursday about the suggested change of months for your challenge. As yet, there has been no reply.

The move to honour George King has met with universal approval on both the facebook and C2 forum and, judging from the earlier replies in this thread, amongst Free Spirits. I hope that I can take it as a done deal and you have no objection to this change.

Please accept my apologies for the apparent lack of consultation. I did try.

Regards,
Joe

The quotes JonT gives.
First one was 3x7’/5’r standing starts, slowest counts
Second one was 30’ rate 24 (3000m or so for her, unrestricted rate)
The last CTC she did was Nov 2017, 4x750m/3’r
She also did 200m, a 4k pyramid, and 10x30”/60”
(So the longest thing she’s done recently, straight or in an interval, is the 1k inside that 4k pyramid.)

Re September CTC. Thank you for considering my note that Gillian was having problems with the complicated tests but I am very sorry to say that a rapid mental deterioration has required a transfer to a Care Home. She cannot stand on her own and is unable to walk, spends much of her day dozing and living in a dream world. I show her our photo albums to encourage memories which gives her pleasure but her ability to communicate is rare. She has a mounted BIRC certificate in her room. Alzheimers is a horrible disease. Roger.
