April ctc - 2k / 1‘r / 500 / 2‘r / 500 / 3‘r / 500, rolling starts except #1

Post by Grobi »

Hi all,

team Cornish Gig Rowers have announced the April ctc:

„Scilly Weekender

In homage to the Pilot Gig World Championships at the end of April, a challenge over four races.

2000m
1 min rest
500m
2 min rest
500m
3 min rest
500m

Rolling starts are accepted after the first 2k - aim for this one is total time accured for all distances together. With a nice rest before the last full empty the tanks 500m.“

Quite an interesting mix between sprinting and endurance. Could be fun 8)

Interesting choice.
I don't think there will be much sprinting in this, not for me anyway. Only the last 500 after 3 min rest will be fairly high rate, all-out on whatever fuel is left.

Probably I will have to give it a few tries to find the correct pacing. First thought is to take it easy on 2k and then full speed, but let’s see. Sounds tough!

So basically 3500m at 2000m pace. But you get some rest, so that’s generous.

Pretty sure this is going to be horrible so I'm pretty sure I'm just going to put down a marker - and walk away from any further attempts on this one.

For 2k pacing the following would work...

2k +2 seconds on 2k 500m pace
500m +0
500m -3
500m -5
Average = 2k pace

Personally given my 2k pace is 1.43.8 that would give a time of 12.06.6. Would below 12 mins be possible? Pacing of +2 / -3 / -5 / -8 would do it but looks very tough given overall pace would be 1 second below 2k pace.

My guess is last year's Fish Game was a once-only prank. But will be checking the website anyway. :)

Just checked the CTC site and it seems to just have the new challenge up. Only one time recorded so far.

With my wife at work and my kids at the Playstation or whatever I thought I might as well see how this one feels. Just entered the second time this month.
And it was tough, as might be expected. During the 2K decided to slow down a bit considering there were three 500m's to go, the first one with only a minute rest. Decided to aim for a mere 1:45 for the first 500. Then two minutes rest, that's more like it. But still the second 500m was hard as well. Starting out again at a 1:45 pace I was hoping to be able to speed up towawrds the end. I managed, but not as much as I had hoped for.
The three minutes rest before the last rep were pleasant. And needed. I was happy to finish the last 500m below 1:40.
Well, 29 days left to im improve...

Good luck everyone

I just want to start by saying hi everybody and what a great community this looks to be. I am new to rowing this year and a total rookie at the team challenges, started yesterday with the cross team challenge but am hooked. Looking for some feedback, I struggle to feel like I can really get my stroke count up. I am 6'3" or 1m 90.5cm (Apologies if that is formatted incorrectly). Is stroke rate on some level dependent on height or would it be a sign that something is off with my technique?

Hope everyone is doing well!

Hey Collin wellcome ! Excellent times ! I think stroke rates depends on many variables- like distance and also drag factor, rowing length - your 2k intervall with the slowest rate compared to the 500m sprint with the highest rate. Considering length, height and stroke rate the app erg data delivers the info drive length...see here http://www.concept2.com/news/drive-length as a usefull information.

Hi Colin

Welcome to Free Spirits and nice first effort at this month's challenge. That middle 500m was astonishing! With more even pacing, I'm sure you could knock several seconds off your total time.

I also had a go at the challenge today. My SB for the 2k was a bit soft at 7:36.2 (compared to some of my more recent rows), so I figured I could do somewhere in or around this pace for the 2k and then try to bring the overall average down when doing the 500s. I actually did a bit better than this in the 2k and improved my SB by 6 seconds. I found the 500s quite tough, but managed to negative split them (thanks to the longer rest periods) to finish in 12:48.1 @ 1:49.7 pace.

Splits were as follows:

Split Time Pace Rating Heart Rate
2000 7:30.2 1:52.6 35 161/146
500 1:48.0 1:48.0 37 164/133
500 1:46.4 1:46.4 36 -/128
500 1:43.5 1:43.5 38 167/133

3500 12:48.1 1:49.7 36 164/135

Well done, Fred, Colin and Paul :!: =D> =D> =D>

Had the initial go yesterday. Hoped I would get below 7:10 in the first rep, didn´t look too promising as wheels came off with 700m to go - but managed to pick up some pace in the last 300-400m so managed it... Have to agree with Fred about the 3 minutes rest being pleasant, well - I like the 2 minutes as well - but it seems like there´s too much to catch up with, perhaps still feeling the first rep as well...

1: 7:09.2 1:47.3 31
2: 1:43.4 32
3: 1:40.7 35
4: 1:38.9 36

I've had a couple of dabbles on this before I checked here for musing on pace. I can't see that I could achieve the 2km pace average now, but it's a heady objective for later in the month Image Image

And this evening, I very nearly did achieve. Pace was 0.3 down on my 2km pb, so quite happy for this stage of the month.Image

Today I had my first go at this and it was hard! Mainly because I decided to give it a try after HDing an HM on RowPro.

Due to the pressure from lower ranks on the Meterboard and the fact that I rowed very little after succeeding in the 10k Mud Challenge (due to the best winter vacation ever with sun, blue sky and perfect snow), I thought I would go for some meters via RowPro. I saw a scheduled HM and thought that it was time to do one again. Turned out the other guy aimed at a 1:57 pace and my PB is 2:00 pace. It felt good so I raced a side with him for 8km before HDing. Not happy with the amount of meters I went for the C2CTC :-)

Intervals
Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
12:29.6 3,500m 1:47.0 285 1280 33
7:14.8 2,000m 1:48.7 273 1237 32
1:46.6 500m 1:46.6 289 1293 33
1:44.7 500m 1:44.7 305 1348 34
1:43.4 500m

So I should be able to go faster next time. The 2k was 20sec above PB....

Hi Tako, i also did this HDing on Wednesday on a rowpro 1h session...my lats were so empty from the strength training on Tuesday...sometimes you win and sometimes you loose...thats the way it is... :P
I decided to give this interesting ctc a go in the gym today...went well to my plan...which was 1:47.5 for the 2k, then negative split 1:47 1:46 and 1:45 for the 500m.

A big bravo for all finishers for now...and for those who want to give it a go in the next days...have fun...or hurting legs/lats or choose another muscle

Hi Colin, welcome to Free Spirits and thank you for your early commitment in the ctc. Like other said I think you are capable of a much faster time with a more even pacing. Pacing this one is a bit tricky so with every new attempt you gain more confidence how to pace it.

I have no idea what you're talking about? :fswink:

Finally I had a go yesterday to see how much fun this one is. To cut a long story short: it isn't! Plan was to not overdo it in the 2k, somehow get the first 500m done after that super short 1 minute rest, and then all in for the two final 500m reps. This is how it went:

image-2018-04-16.jpg

Initially I had thought of a 1:50/1:51 pace for the 2k but soon realised that this would kill me in the following 500m, so I took it a bit easier. The first 500m were a nightmare, amazing how quickly a minute can pass  The following sets of 500s were better so overall I'm quite happy with the result (and of course annoyed now that I didn't go sub 12:40 :D ).

Sorry Mr Bee. I didn't think I'd be anywhere near your score but the 2k went OK. That said my 500's weren't anything at all pleasant and were all just "heavy" feeling.

A bit surprised with my total of 12:56.0 (a whole 0.1s faster than your time - oops)
